CLEAR ALLAmerican Burmese cats are the perfect candidates for winning over those who say they are not fans of felines. With their huge expressive eyes, friendly personalities, and dog-like tendencies, these cats will soften even the most strongly opinionated people!
It's hard to not fall in love with these adorable cats. Burmese cats come in two distinct varieties; American and European. Both breeds are incredibly social and will swiftly learn to play interactive games like tag or fetch as well as any dog. They are so intelligent and playful that even "non-cat people" will struggle to resist their charms. They are both also stunning to look at, with close-lying glossy coats and expressive eyes. The difference between the two can be seen in their appearance. The American Burmese is more rounded, wheras the European Burmese is more slender and oriental-looking.
Both American and European Burmese are sweet and delightful feline companions, that are strongly people-oriented – these cats love to curl up on any available lap. They also enjoy joining in with family playtime. These cats are known to follow their humans around the house, even diving under the covers with you. Because of the highly affectionate nature of Burmese, they are extremely tolerant of children and other pets, and they adore a good cuddle.
It’s worth noting that all Burmese cats tend to struggle if they are left alone for long periods. So, you will need to ensure that someone is home for most of the day. Burmese cats have softer voices than their Siamese cousins, but they still enjoy "chatting" with their human companions about the events of their day.
Because of their intelligence, Burmese cats thrive with families who are keen to teach them tricks and commands, play games, and provide plenty of interactive toys. They are happy with families who can give them plenty of love and attention.

Meet the American Burmese
The American Burmese is often mistaken for the similar-looking European Burmese. However, their are slight differences. Both breeds are muscular in both appearance and feel. However, the American Burmese is a stockier looking cat with a rounded appearance, erect ears that are rounded at the tips, full cheeks, and a flattened-looking muzzle. Conversely, the European Burmese has a more slender appearance, with a wedge-shaped muzzle and thinner, taller ears that are set low on the head. In both breeds, males are generally larger than females.
The American Burmese has a very broad, rounded head that is absent of any flat or sharp edges. Their large round eyes are set far apart on the face, which gives them their characteristic alert and almost ‘childish’ expression. European Burmese have notably slanted eyes set on a more triangular shaped face with a strong, prominent chin. The legs and medium-length tail should be in proportion to the body, with rounded paws, in the American Burmese. Overall, the European has a more oriental appearance with thin, elegant looking paw pads.
The short, close-lying coat of the American and European Burmese breeds boast a glossy, sleek appearance and is silky to the touch. The most widely recognised coat colour is dark sable brown. However, American Burmese cats also come in blue, champagne, and platinum (lilac). European Burmese have a much wider range of colours, 10 in total, including brown tortoise, red, and cream.
Coat colour has no effect on eye colour in the Burmese because all cats have expressive gold or amber eyes. Burmese kittens are born with distinct darker shaded areas on their coats which fade as they get older. Adult Burmese cats are known for their solid, glossy coat colours. However, the face and ears can be darker than the rest of the body.
American Burmese Temperament
Despite their differences in appearance, both American and European Burmese have very similar temperaments. They are incredibly affectionate and highly intelligent cats, that love to be wherever their owners are! Due to their Siamese ancestry, these cats are quite chatty and have no issues telling you when they want something. However, their voices are significantly softer than Siamese cats. They love nothing more than curling up on your lap and may even join you under the sheets at bedtime. They are very social cats, so they thrive in the company of others.
Due to their high intelligence, American and European Burmese cats love to play interactive games with the family and enjoy the stimulation that comes with clicker training. They can be taught to perform a whole host of tricks from playing fetch to learning commands. For this reason, American and European Burmese cats need to be provided with plenty of stimulation which can come in the form of puzzle games, regular training, or fuss from every member of the household!
Best Homes for American Burmese
Both European and American Burmese cats are extremely social, so they don’t do well when left alone for long periods. For this reason, they are best suited to a home where someone is home for most of the day. They are fairly adaptable felines. So, as long as they get the attention they require, they can thrive in most home environments, from apartments to large houses. These cats are very playful and tolerant of young children, which makes them the perfect choice for families.
American Burmese cats have been known to get along well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs. However, you must ensure that you introduce them properly to avoid any incidents. It’s best to introduce Burmese cats to other pets when they are young, to increase the likelihood of them getting along.
