Breed traits and characteristics

The Russian Blue is the cat world's aristocrat because of their shimmering coats and exquisite, delicate looks. They have beautiful emerald green eyes that complement their coat colour. Russian Blues have very loving smiles on their adorable faces, making these medium-size cats one of the most popular and endeared breeds throughout the world.

This cat breed can draw instant attraction with their silvery blue, glittering coat and enchanting green eyes. However, it is their intelligent, playful and comical nature that makes a Russian Blue the perfect pet for a lot of families.

Russian Blue cats are sweet-natured, loyal, and affectionate. They are known to be social, intelligent, and friendly to people. You can see them following their owner from room to room, sometimes even on their shoulder.

While they are commonly docile, Russian Blue cats can be very vocal and use their voice to chat back and forth and communicate with others. They will always respond to you when you speak to them.

They are very observant and persistent. Once a Russian Blue cat thinks you are worthy of his or her attention, he tends to become extraordinarily loving and expects the same in return. They get along well with children and other pets, making them an excellent companion.

This cat breed thrives on structure, and thus, it is a challenge for them to adapt to changes – including unknown visitors and different meal times to what they are used to. However, Russian Blue cats are well-suited for apartment living as they can be left home alone without any unfortunate incidents. They enjoy alone time and usually look for a quiet and private space to sleep. Thus, they make ideal companions for those who spend long hours at work.

10 reasons to add a Russian Blue to your family

You will never feel deprived of love and affection with a Russian Blue in the home as they love to follow their owners around, greet them at the door, and curl up with them in bed.

A Russian Blue will not create havoc in the home like some more energetic breeds and do not act needy either.

Russian Blues don’t shed much, and they produce low levels of the Fel D1 that triggers allergic reactions, making them a good breed if you’re allergic.

You’ll only need to brush your Russian Blue’s coat once a week, along with brushing their teeth once or twice a week too.

Most Russian Blues don’t have many health issues throughout their life as they are not prone to any genetic illness or diseases.

Fully grown Russian Blue cats will be very relaxed and peaceful felines. But, while young, they will have a curious and playful nature. It takes 3 to 4 years for them to lose all their adolescent traits, so they stay kitten-like for a long time.

Russian Blues are clever enough to learn tricks and be trained. They have an excellent memory, so teaching them does not take too long either.

Russian Blues appreciate alone time so you will have no problem leaving them alone when you go to work.

If you like to sunbathe, a Russian Blue will make your perfect companion. They often seek out the sunniest spots to lay in and adore the sensation of warmth on their fur.

Lastly, you cannot deny that a Russian Blue is aesthetically stunning and regal-like in looks and mannerism.

Meet the Russian Blue

If you’ve ever seen a Russian Blue cat, you’ve surely marvelled at their shimmery silvery-blue coat. This short-haired breed has a double coat, with the undercoat being soft and downy. The strands of hair found in the overcoat have silver tips, which produce this shimmering effect.

A Russian Blue’s coat is thick, plush, and feels soft to the touch. Their coat does not have any patterning, although as kittens, they may appear to have faint stripes, which will vanish as they get older.

Another interesting fact about Russian Blue kittens is that they are one of the few breeds not born with blue eyes. Instead, Russian Blue kittens will have yellow eyes with green rims. As they get older, these will slowly transition to a full vivid green shade.

Russian Blues are medium-size cats with an average weight. Males tend to be bigger, weighing 10 to 12 pounds when fully grown, compared to 7 to 10 pounds for females. They have a long, slender body with delicate bones but a muscular form. Moreover, their thick fur makes them appear more robust than they are.

Russian Blues get their elegant look from their faces, with a broad forehead, straight nose and large ears. In terms of looks, they are comparable to the blue-coated British Shorthair. However, one key difference is that this breed comes in various colours, whereas Russian Blues only come in one.

A Russian Blue’s temperament

Russian Blues have a charming and loving nature and enjoy following their owners around the house. Some Russian Blues may pick a “favourite” human, but they show affection to everyone in the home nonetheless.

They are a calm cat breed and demonstrate a favourable balance between social interactions and alone time. However, one thing to note about these gentle felines is that they are not the most confident or extroverted cats. They love to spend time with their family unit, but they will likely be shy around visitors or unfamiliar people.

As kittens, Russian Blues can be very playful. However, as they grow up, their energy levels decrease. However, because they are extremely intelligent, they still require regular physical and mental stimulation. To keep them satisfied, you’ll need to provide plenty of toys, including some challenging puzzle games to work their wise minds. They also have a strong hunting nature, so they love felt mice and feather birds on sticks that they can chase and catch.

Despite their gentle temperament and independence, Russian Blues can be very vocal. Their voice is undoubtedly their preferred way to communicate their needs to their owners. Therefore, whenever your Russian Blue is hungry or bored, you will know about it!

Be mindful of how much you feed your Russian Blue, too, as they are known to be big eaters and may ask for seconds. So you might have to be strict in portion sizes and treats to keep them at a healthy weight.

Best homes for Russian Blue cats

Russian Blues are reserved kitties who don’t adapt well to change. Because of this, they do best in quiet homes without many visitors coming and going. They are also a good option for cat owners who work out of the house as they will happily stay alone during the day. However, if this is the case, be sure to spend quality time with them in the evening.

Russian Blues can coexist well with other pets, including dogs. However, they will get along best with other cats with similar temperaments. They are also great around children, providing they play gently. They do startle easily, though, so they make a better feline companion for older children than younger ones.

FAQs about the Russian Blue

At The Pedigree Paws, we work with only the very best licensed breeders from the UK and Europe. This gives our customers the assurance that their Russian Blue kitten will be healthy, well cared for, and grow into a well-developed, sweet-tempered adult.

Despite kitten mills being made illegal in Great Britain, some unlicensed breeders still breed animals in an unethical way. Our mission is to fight these dishonourable pet farms. Therefore, we support only moral breeders who focus on each kitten’s quality of health instead of how many kittens they can produce.

Russian Blues are a quiet, reserved, and independent cat breed that plays and rests in proportional amounts and showers their owners with love. So if you're looking for a relaxed feline to greet you at the door when you arrive home and snuggle with you on the sofa, you'll love these beautiful silver-grey kitties.

Do you have a bustling home with many visitors coming and going or very young children? If so, a Russian Blue may not be a good fit. This is because they have tendencies to get anxious about loud noises and large groups of people. However, if your home is tranquil and slow-paced, a Russian Blue kitten will find much happiness with you.

It can be hard to find trustworthy people to buy a pedigree kitten from like a Russian Blue. That's why we've done the hard work for you and sourced the best breeders in the UK and Europe. So, if you worry about being scammed and want to avoid kitten mills, getting a Russian Blue kitten from The Pedigree Paws is the most trustworthy choice.

We've built complete trust with our customers and facilitated many successful human and animal meetings by working in a fully transparent way. You can see these success stories for yourself on our testimonials page.

Yes, we're pleased to say that we only work with breeders who follow firm protocols to ensure the kittens are healthy. This means that every Russian Blue kitten we sell has had a thorough health check with a licensed vet. Additionally, they receive deworming treatment, a microchip, and their complete set of vaccinations, so you can simply enjoy getting to know your new Russian Blue.

It's also a requirement that both parents of all our Russian Blue kittens have to get a DNA test. As some cat breeds can be susceptible to genetic diseases, a DNA test is essential to ensure that the kitten does not have any genetic mutations. If no issues are present, you will know your Russian Blue is unlikely to develop health problems throughout their life.

We know once you've chosen your kitten, you want to meet them straight away. However, early weaning can be detrimental to a kitten's health and development. What's more, as Russian Blue kittens are less adaptable to change than other breeds, we prefer that they stay with their mother and siblings until they are 10-13 weeks old. However, this is just a guideline, and you can discuss the exact time scale with the breeder.

Absolutely! When buying a Russian Blue kitten, it is always a good idea to see the kitten's parents. Therefore, we will arrange a video call between you and the breeder to see the kitten and one or both parents. Seeing friendly and healthy-looking Russian Blue parents will give you peace of mind that your new kitten will be healthy too.

Yes, all our Russian Blue kittens come with internationally recognised pedigree documents such as GCCF, TICA, FIFe. The exact registration documents you will receive will depend on the location of the breeder. In Great Britain, most kittens are registered under GCCF.

Yes, our Russian Blue kittens come from only the very best breeders in the industry. These breeders adhere to strict animal welfare policies set by international organisations, such as The Cat Fanciers' Association, along with our own comprehensive breeder selection process.

This ensures we work with the most passionate and ethical breeders around. For example, we ensure our breeders treat each kitten like a family member and not a product that will make them money. In this way, we know the kittens will grow into well-mannered and gentle-tempered cats and display the best qualities of the Russian Blue breed.

Before coming to you, your Russian Blue is raised in a clean and loving family home environment with their parents and siblings. There are various reasons why we do not work with commercial breeding facilities. Aside from the main priority of breeding facilities being to make money, this environment is more likely to be unclean. Plus, the kittens do not get the individual care and attention needed, potentially leading to poor health, well-being, and development.

From our experience, we've found the healthiest and happiest Russian Blue kittens are the ones that spend their first few months of life in a family environment. This also gives them the essential socialisation they need at a young age and makes them more comfortable meeting new people.

As Russian Blues have a tendency to get anxious and scared in new environments, they need some extra help adapting to a new home.

● Firstly, ask the breeder to send your kitten along with a towel or blanket with their mother's scent. The feline pheromones that mother cats give off are very calming and can help your kitten feel safe.
● Only let them access one room of the house at first. Depending on their personality, you may need to confine them to the room for 1 to 5 days. Then slowly, introduce them to other parts of the home under supervision.
● Do not invite any guests around until you're confident the kitten is feeling settled.
