Breed traits and characteristics

The Affenpinscher, commonly known as the Monkey Terrier, is a tiny toy dog with a very distinct appearance. They have extremely short muzzles, making them look more like apes and humans than dogs. However, you'll find their personality is similar to other pups, as they are incredibly loving, charming, and loyal.

Although they are not a well-known breed, Affenpinschers have been around for a long time, dating back to at least the 16th century. Originating from Germany, they initially served as rat hunters until they began making their way into people's homes in the mid-1800s.

Since then, despite remaining a relatively rare breed, Affenpinschers have been adored and cherished by enthusiasts of this breed.

10 reasons to add a Affenpinscher to your family

Weighing less than 5 kilos and standing less than a foot tall, these pups take up little space and are easy to carry and transport around.

No other dog breed looks like the affenpinscher, and no other dog looks as much like a monkey as this one!

These pups learn exceptionally quickly and ace all types of training, from agility to obedience.

These canines will keep you entertained with their hilarious antics and then cuddle up with you once they tire out. The best of both worlds!

This dog will fall in love with you immediately and develop an insanely deep and loyal bond with you.

Do you have a bilingual household? If so, this is the pup for you. The Affenpinscher, who won the Best in Show award at the Westminster Kennel Club in 2013, reportedly could understand four languages: German, Dutch, Spanish, and English.

Affenpinschers can find happiness in all living environments, including apartments. This breed is very good at finding ways to entertain themselves indoors - though they still need daily walks.

While they adore interactive play as much as the next pooch, Affenpinschers are known to entertain themselves by playing a solo game of catch.

While their coats are somewhat shaggy, this breed does not shed much and, thus, is a good choice for people with mild allergies.

It's common for Affenpinschers to live past 15 years.

Meet the Affenpinscher

Affenpinschers are tiny dogs, standing just 23 to 30 cm tall and weighing between 3.2 and 4.5 kg. Their two most distinctive features are their jet-black wiry fur and their monkey-like face with a short muzzle.

Their heads are relatively small in proportion to the rest of their body, with a domed forehead, a broad brow, and a distinct stop. They have dark, round eyes and small ears set high on the head.

Their bodies are compact and solid, with strong hindquarters standing on small round feet with black paw pads. They have well-sprung ribs and bellies and a short tail set high.

The Affenpinscher's fur is short, dense, and with a rough sensation. It can appear shaggy on some body parts while remaining short on others. Interestingly, their fur naturally fans around their face, adding to their monkey-like appearance.

The Affenpinscher's coat comes in one colour only - jet black, although some may have some slight grey shading. Their coat can matt easily, so it needs to be combed at least twice a week.

The temperament of an Affenpinscher

Despite being tiny dogs, Affenpinschers are full of courage. They can be both playful and affectionate, often switching between both sides of their personality.

They are also intelligent and possess excellent agility skills. Affenpinscher owners comment on how quickly they learn things and claim they have a unique, highly ordered thinking process.

However, the monkey terrier's high intelligence means they get bored quickly. They need a lot of physical and mental stimulation, including interactive play, to meet their energy and social interaction requirements.

In fact, these pups love being around humans and detest being left alone. This is something you should keep in mind if you're considering getting one of these "monkey dogs".

While these pups love to be on the go, when they tire out, they are happy to nap on their owner's lap - and can become quite snuggly.

This breed can be pretty vocal and may yap when startled or afraid. Excessive yapping can be controlled through training if you start from puppyhood. Early socialisation is equally essential for Affenpinschers, as they can grow up wary around strangers and new situations without it.

Best homes for an Affenpinscher

Affenpinschers do best with an owner who is home often and has a lot of time for them. They do not do well with busy working professionals, as they can suffer quite severe separation anxiety.

Although they cannot be left alone for too long, Affenpinschers are still an excellent choice for new dog owners as they are responsive, people-oriented, and highly affectionate.

While they can be loving family pets, Affenpinschers have some traits that make them not the best fit for homes with small children. For example, they can be overly protective, and many are unwilling to be picked up and held by children.

Because they have a very high prey drive, Affenpinschers are not well suited for homes with small animals, including cats. Of course, the level of prey drive differs between each affenpinscher, so it may be possible to find one that can get along well with cats. But in general, if you want to give them a friend, get another dog, as they typically get along well with other canines.

FAQs about the Affenpinscher

We have taken great care to ensure we only work with private, licensed and ethical Affenpinscher breeders. We're pleased to say that all our breeders meet our high standards and raise their puppies in their family homes rather than in a commercial facility. In this environment, they socialise with humans and other animals from birth, which is vital for this breed.

What's more, we take the health of each Affenpinscher puppy extremely seriously. To ensure your new pup is free from genetic health conditions, we run a medical check-up and a DNA test that scans for various diseases.

In addition, we partner with a reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel company to bring your new pup to you safely and stress-free.

Affenpinschers are intelligent, playful and people-loving dogs. They adore being around people but can suffer separation anxiety if left alone for a long time. Therefore, if you lead a busy lifestyle and are often away from home, this may not be the breed for you.

These pups are intelligent and responsive, making a fab canine for first-time pet owners. Plus, they only need short walks (as they have little legs), making them a good fit for older people.

Note that these dogs are unsuitable for homes with cats and very small children. However, they can make excellent companions for families with older children who can respect the dog's boundaries.

We dream that the world will be free from unethical pet breeding someday. To play our part in making that a reality, we are careful about who we work with and only partner with private, licensed breeders. We ensure they can demonstrate significant experience and prove that they raise their puppies in their family homes.

Affenpinschers have fairly long lifespans and can live past 15 years old. However, this doesn't mean that they are free from health concerns.

We do multiple things to ensure your Affenpinscher's life is long and healthy. This includes a medical check-up, DNA test, vaccinations, and microchipping. Moreover, we provide five weeks of health insurance for all our puppies to give you additional peace of mind and assurance.

Affenpinscher puppies must stay with their mother until they reach at least ten weeks old. This period is crucial for the puppy's health and development and allows them to wean naturally.

Of course, bear in mind that puppies develop at different rates, so the breeder may not be able to give you a specific date your puppy will be ready immediately. If so, the breeder will update you on the pup's development.

As pet owners ourselves, we know choosing a new furry friend can be complex and stressful. Naturally, you want to be 100% sure that your new pup is healthy, friendly and comes from a good place.

One of the best ways to ensure this is to see the puppy and its parents in person before purchasing. However, you will likely live too far from the breeder to do this. If so, we will provide photos of the puppy and its parents as an alternative. Or, you can set up a call with the breeder to meet the pup virtually.

Yes, of course. All our breeders register their Affenpinscher puppies with The Kennel Club, which proves they meet the breed standard and are free from hereditary diseases. They complete the registration process before the sale, so you'll receive the original registration documents before or along with your new puppy.

At The Pedigree Paws, we can confidently say all our Affenpinscher puppies come from a safe, clean, and ethical environment where they receive ample love and care. This is thanks to the thorough application process we require every breeder to complete and the various checks we run as a business.

Therefore, you can rest assured that all our breeders are licensed and registered with the relevant breeding organisation. Moreover, we only work with private breeders and are not associated with commercial facilities in any way.

Every Pedigree Paws puppy spends the first two months of its life with its mother and siblings in the breeder's home. They will only leave this environment when they are fully weaned and physically, mentally, and emotionally ready for their forever home. During their time with the breeder, they socialise with humans and other dogs, helping them become even-tempered and well-mannered canines.

While Affenpinschers are generally people-loving dogs, as puppies, they can be a bit wary. Therefore, they may be slightly shy when bringing them home. Here are some things you can do to help them settle in fast and effortlessly.

● Upon arrival, avoid the urge to show your new pup around the entire home, introducing them to everyone immediately. Instead, put them in a small quiet room for the first few hours to give them time to decompress.
● Create a cosy, safe corner for your new pup in both the quiet room and the main room of the house. That way, they have somewhere to go should they feel scared or overwhelmed.
● Let your new pup settle in at its own pace, and don't force them to play if they are not ready.
