Breed traits and characteristics

This beautiful dog breed is known as the “King of Terriers” because it is the largest among all the terrier breeds. Airedale Terriers are native to the United Kingdom and originally bred in Yorkshire. It is believed that their name comes from the Airedale Show, an event that many “waterside dogs” were exhibited.

These elegant dogs have a distinguished and unique appearance. They have tremendous scenting capabilities, which is why many countries have used them to help police and armed forces in their line of work. Being a family dog, the Airedale Terrier is well-known for being good with children of all ages. However, they are probably better suited to families with older children because of their boisterous, playful natures. These high-spirited dogs rarely show any aggression towards family pets and other dogs. For this very reason, the Airedale Terrier can become a valued, devoted, and loyal member of the family.

Airedale Terriers are confident, outgoing, and intelligent. They have a comical side that brings joy to their families. However, first-time dog owners and apartment dwellers must be aware that these dogs are high-energy. They need plenty of exercise, so, their intensity may not be ideal for novice pet parents.

However, if you have the space for them to run around in and have the time to attend to their physical needs, the Airedale Terrier could be an excellent match for you. Provide them with time, love, and attention, and you will be rewarded with a loving, playful companion.

10 reasons to add a Airedale Terrier to your family

If you're looking for a watchdog or want to feel safer at home or while out and about, an Airedale Terrier is a top choice.

When this pup isn't protecting you, they will fill their free time doing silly antics to make you giggle. This canine is sure to brighten your day!

Once you build a bond with an Airedale (which doesn't take long), that connection will last a lifetime.

While they shed an average amount, you won't have to take them to the groomers every month, and they rarely need baths.

These canines learn fast, so although they require a lot of training, they will pick things up quickly.

These dogs have a long and diverse history. From catching rats in rivers to competing in agility tests to assisting casualties, there is little an Airedale cannot do.

Their high energy levels mean they will get you up off the couch on the weekends. So if you want to get more active and spend more time outdoors, an Airedale will happily be your personal trainer.

One positive side to the Airedale's high prey drive is that they will keep your home free from rats and other pests.

Their high intelligence and protective streak make Airedales pretty good "babysitters" for children.

Ok, they didn't fight per say, but this breed played a crucial role in both world wars, sending messages and carrying food and ammunition. Pretty impressive!

Meet the Airedale Terrier

As the largest dog in the terrier group, Airedales can weigh anywhere from 18 to 19 kg and typically stand between 56 and 58 cm tall. These pups have a distinct appearance: long, flat heads, v-shaped floppy ears, and a sturdy, robust body frame.

Airedale Terriers are well-muscled, including their legs, hindquarters, and necks. They also have a short, compact back and a deep, well-proportioned chest. Holding their strong legs are small, neat paws with well-cushioned, arched pads. Their tails are set high and are often held erect.

Another distinctive feature of the Airedale is its wiry, dense fur. This double coat consists of a rough top coat with a slight kink and a softer, shorter undercoat. Most Airedales share the same fur colour and patterning, primarily tan, with black or "grizzled" patches on their backs and upper sides.

Airedales shed a fair amount, but their hair grows slowly, so they rarely need a trim. Still, if you prefer to keep their coat looking fresh, you can wash and trim it three to four times a year.

The temperament of an Airedale Terrier

The two best characteristics to describe this dog are energetic and intelligent, which is what made them so valuable during the war. They learn exceptionally quickly, so you can train them to do many cool things.

However, first, you should train them to develop a strong "recall" command, as this breed has a very high prey drive. Because of this, most Airedales have an independent streak and can also be mischievous.

These canines are also known to form strong bonds with their owners and possess an instinctual protective streak over those they love, making them excellent guard dogs. Don't worry; they are not always so serious, though; Airedales also have a very playful and fun-loving side and can be quite the entertainers.

However, do bear in mind that these dogs may try to test their limits and boundaries without training. They also have strong instincts to dig; this can be toned down with training but not completely eliminated.

The primary need of an Airedale is sufficient exercise. If you can keep their body active and mind engaged, they won't get bored, and undesirable behaviours are less likely to occur. Keep their training and playtime fresh, switching between toys and games often.

These dogs are at their happiest when they are outside playing with their owners. They adore being outdoors but don't like being left alone, so they are not 'backyard dogs'.

In the house, these pups will hunt for "treasures." They are quite the collectors and will pick up small objects with their mouths and take them to their hidden stash of goodies. So, if you notice your socks keep disappearing, this is your culprit!

Terrier Best homes for an Airedale Terrier

As they are very protective, Airedales make lovely family pets and can form close, loyal bonds with all household members, including children. However, they are best suited to homes with older children, as their large size and high energy can prove a bit intense if you have babies or toddlers around.

Airedales can become friends with other dogs, but introduce them while they are young for best results. These canines can be wary of unfamiliar dogs they meet in the park or on the street, as they can think they are a threat, and thus, they must protect you. This is something you should work on during training.

Lastly, note that because of their high prey drive, Airedales are not suited to homes with small animals, including cats.

FAQs about the Airedale Terrier

We are always very cautious to ensure we only work with licensed, ethical Airedale Terrier breeders who operate privately rather than run commercial breeding programs. We're happy to say that all our breeders meet our high standards, raising their puppies in their own homes, where they socialise with humans from birth, which is vital for this breed.

What's more, we take the health of each Airedale Terrier puppy exceptionally seriously. For example, every puppy undergoes a DNA health test to scan for various diseases, ensuring they are free from genetic health conditions.

Moreover, we have partnered up with the most reputable (and veterinarian-approved) pet travel company in the UK. They can bring your new pup to you safely and stress-free should you live too far from the breeder to pick it up yourself.

Airedale Terriers are intelligent, protective yet playful and people-loving canines. They adore being around people and will form close bonds with all household members.

However, while easy to train, Airedale Terriers can display various undesirable behavioural traits like chasing, digging, and barking. Thus, due to their training needs, they are best suited to people with previous experience with dogs.

Moreover, because of their high prey drive, Airedales are unsuitable for homes with cats. Their size and high energy can be intense for small kids, but they do splendidly with older children.

We hope the world will be free from unethical pet breeding someday. Until then, we will continue to play our part by ensuring we only partner with private, licensed breeders who run ethical operations. All breeders must show they have significant experience with this breed and prove they raise their puppies in their family homes before working with us.

Like most breeds, Airedales do have some breed-specific health concerns. Thus, we do various things to ensure your new terrier is as healthy as can be. This includes a full medical check-up, DNA health test, core vaccinations, and microchipping. In addition, we provide five weeks of health insurance for all our puppies (starting from their arrival date) to give you additional peace of mind.

Airedale Terrier puppies must stay with their mother until they have weaned naturally and show signs of being physically and emotionally independent. This is typically between ten and twelve weeks old, but as puppies develop at different rates, this can vary.

If the pup you're interested in is not yet available, the breeder will update you on its development and give you an expected "ready date" as soon as possible.

As pet owners, we know choosing a new canine companion can be complex and stressful. Of course, you want to be 100% sure that your new Airedale pup is healthy, friendly and comes from a good place before you hand over any money.

One of the best ways to ensure you're getting a healthy puppy is to meet the pup and its parents in person before purchasing. However, when purchasing online, you will likely live too far from the breeder to do this. If so, don't worry; we will provide photos of the puppy and its parents, or you can set up a call with the breeder.

Yes, of course. All our breeders register their Airedale puppies with The Kennel Club, proving they meet the breed standard and are free from the association’s list of hereditary diseases. The breeder will complete this process before the sale takes place, so you'll receive the original registration documents before or along with your new Airedale pup.

At The Pedigree Paws, we can say with total confidence that all our Airedale puppies come from a safe, clean, loving, and ethical environment. This is thanks to our mandatory application process and the various checks we carry out on each breeder.

Thanks to this, you can rest assured that all our breeders are licensed, registered with the relevant breeding organisation, and genuinely adore dogs. Moreover, we only work with private breeders and are not associated with commercially-run breeding operations.

All our Airedale puppies spend the first two or so months of their life with their mother and siblings in the breeder's family home. They only leave this environment when they are weaned and appear physically, mentally, and emotionally independent. During their time with the breeder, they will socialise with humans and other dogs, helping them become friendly, even-tempered canine companions.

While Airedale Terriers are generally people-loving dogs, as puppies, it's only natural that they might be a bit wary at first. Here are a couple of tips and tricks you can try to help them settle into their new home.

● Upon arrival, DO NOT show your new pup around the entire home and introduce them to all household members, your neighbours, and visiting friends! Instead, keep them in a small quiet room for the first few hours to give them time to decompress. This is especially important if they have had a long journey.
● For the first few days/weeks, make a cosy, safe corner somewhere in the home for your new pup to retreat to whenever they feel scared or overwhelmed. This place should be semi-covered, quiet, and free from constant activity.
