Breed traits and characteristics

A hound native to France, the Basset Bleu de Gascogne is among the lesser-known French hounds in the United Kingdom because they were only recently introduced to England. These charming hounds were first bred in the Gascony region of France, where they got their name. The Basset Bleu de Gascogne was initially bred to work, but today, they make excellent family pets and affectionate, loyal canine companions.

While they are frequently confused with their cousin, the Basset Hound, the Basset Bleu de Gascogne is rare. In fact, there are only a handful of dogs registered by the Kennel Club. These charming dogs are a slow-and-steady type of hunting dog so hunters can keep up with them on foot. The Basset Bleu de Gascogne has a strong prey drive and a remarkable sense of smell that can track scent trails several days old.

The Basset Bleu as a working dog is generally kept in packs. As a result, they are very sociable and easy-going. These dogs develop deep bonds with their human companions and make good-natured pets for people of all ages. Even though the Basset Bleu de Gascogne is not built for speed, they still require a good deal of exercise. So, they make ideal hiking or walking companions.

In the 1990s, the Basset Bleu de Gascogne was recognised as a breed by the Kennel Club. While this dog breed is very popular in France, they are not currently in demand in the United Kingdom.

10 reasons to add a Basset Bleu de Gascogne to your family

This highly affectionate canine adores cuddles and snuggling up with their owners, especially after a long, busy day.

Basset Bleus love people in general, so you can expect them to become best friends with your family, friends, neighbours, and even people they meet on the street.

Basset Bleus are playful and gentle, making wonderful companions for children of all ages.

If you want your children to spend more time outdoors, a Basset Bleu will help them do so. These hounds need at least two hours daily, so they will certainly keep the whole family active.

Yes, these hounds are known for their iconic sing-song barking style.

As their coats are short and hard-wearing, you'll hardly ever need to groom your Basset Bleu. Weekly brushing is fine, but you can increase it to 2-3 times a week during periods of high shedding.

What sets the Basset Bleu apart from other canines is its distinct and beautiful ticked white coat with brown spots and tan markings.

Bred to follow scent trails, Basset Bleus have an amazing sense of smell that can result in many fun games hiding treats and toys.

This dog dates back to the 14th century and descended from an even older breed, the Grand Bleu de Gascogne

While the French adore these dogs, they are yet to gain popularity in Britain. In 2013, just 11 of these dogs were registered in the UK, and the number has not risen much since then.

Meet the Basset Bleu de Gascogne

As a relative of the Basset Hound, the medium-sized Basset Bleu de Gascogne has an extra long body that hangs low to the ground because of its short legs. They typically weigh between 15 and 20 kg and stand 30 to 38 cm tall.

One physical trait that differentiates the Basset Bleu from Basset Hounds is their skin, which is much less floppy. This taut skin makes them weigh about 4.5 kg less than their cousins.

Other distinctive features of this breed are their reasonably large heads and black and white mottled coat. Their short and dense coats have tan spots above each eye, along with tan markings on their cheeks, ears, and sometimes legs.

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne's long body features a deep chest that extends to its elbows, well-rounded ribs, and a slightly tucked-up belly. Their well-muscled shoulders and strong loins also add to their athletic appearance.

This hound's wedge-shaped head features a large black nose with large flared nostrils, a characteristic responsible for their incredible sense of smell. Above their nose are dark brown oval-shaped eyes and large floppy ears set low and curling slightly inwards.

The temperament of a Basset Bleu de Gascogne

Despite being bred to be working dogs, Basset Bleu de Gascognes have many beautiful qualities for home life, such as their unwavering loyalty, laidback nature, and irresistible charm.

This hound is highly energetic and playful, requiring multiple daily walks and play sessions. While this means they are high maintenance in this area, you will always feel their gratitude for your time and effort when they curl up next to you at the end of the day.

Basset Bleu de Gascognes do best in homes with an enclosed garden. This takes some pressure off the owner as this dog is happy to run around the garden independently.

These hounds are very loving and gentle, and they adore being around people, including children. As sociable dogs, they get along with everyone. While their friendliness is endearing, it does mean they are not "guard dog material".

Basset Bleu de Gascogne dogs are highly intelligent but can be stubborn during training sessions due to their independent streak. Thus, if you let them, they will tell you when the training session is over, not the other way around!

Because of their heightened scent and hearing senses, these dogs can get easily distracted, one of the many reasons to cultivate a consistent training schedule as soon as possible.

Best homes for a Basset Bleu de Gascogne

Basset Bleus make wonderful family pets as they adore children and are incredibly affectionate and gentle. As pack animals, Basset Bleus typically get along with other dogs, especially if raised together from puppyhood.

However, as they have a high prey drive, Basset Bleus are not suited to homes with smaller pets. In addition, they should be kept on a lead when out walking to avoid them chasing anything they may see.

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne thrives with an active owner who has ample time to spend with them and enjoys taking them on long nature walks.

FAQs about the Basset Bleu de Gascogne

At Pedigree Paws, we have high standards when choosing breeders for our Basset Bleu de Gascogne breed. All of our breeders are licensed and experienced professionals committed to ethical breeding practices. We work only with private breeders, avoiding commercial breeding programs.

Our breeders prioritise the well-being of their puppies by providing a nurturing home environment instead of cages. You can rest assured that each puppy is well-cared for and safe.

The health and happiness of every Basset Bleu de Gascogne puppy is our top priority. We conduct DNA health checks for genetic diseases, provide five weeks of health insurance for each puppy, and partner with a reputable pet travel company that is veterinarian-approved to ensure the safe delivery of your new furry family member.

Basset Bleu de Gascogne are affectionate and charming to all humans, including strangers, but they reserve the utmost loyalty for their owners. However, they are also highly energetic and playful, so they need an owner who has lots of time for them and can match their activity levels. They also do best in a home with an enclosed garden where they can let loose.

Basset Bleus are an excellent fit for families with children due to their playful but patient nature. They typically get on with other dogs, but their high prey drive makes them not a good fit for homes with small animals.

At The Pedigree Paws, our main objective is to eliminate unethical dog breeding. In pursuit of this goal, we exclusively collaborate with licensed private breeders who conduct their businesses ethically from their homes. Moreover, we conduct rigorous screening and security checks on each breeder to guarantee that they meet our stringent standards of expertise and commitment.

The average lifespan of a Basset Bleu de Gascogne dog is around 11 to 13 years, but they are susceptible to some health issues common among both shorter and longer dogs. However, we prioritise your dog's health and offer various steps to ensure optimal well-being.

These steps include a comprehensive medical examination by a licensed veterinarian, DNA testing to identify any genetic medical problems early on, necessary vaccinations, and a five-week health insurance coverage plan.

It's essential for Basset Bleu de Gascogne puppies to stay with their mother until they naturally wean and show signs of healthy growth and development. Usually, these puppies are ready for their permanent homes at ten to twelve weeks old, depending on their progress. If the puppy you want is not available, you can ask the breeder for an expected availability date.

When looking for a new furry friend, it's super important to ensure they are coming from a reliable breeder. We recommend meeting your Basset Bleu de Gascogne puppy and its parents in person before buying. If that's not possible, don't worry, we can help! We'll provide you with pictures or set up a video call with the breeder to give you peace of mind.

When purchasing a Basset Bleu de Gascogne puppy from The Pedigree Paws, you can trust that our breeders have registered them with the appropriate pedigree organisation in the UK. This registration ensures the puppy meets breed standards and has no genetic ailments. The breeder will provide the original certificate when you receive your new puppy.

Our Basset Bleu de Gascogne puppies are raised in a loving and safe environment - the breeder's family home. We prioritise their well-being by providing them with proper medical care, love, and socialisation from birth. To maintain the highest standards, we carefully screen and randomly inspect the breeders we partner with. Please note that we only collaborate with licensed breeding facilities, not commercially-run ones.

Pedigree Paws ensures that every puppy is raised in the breeder's family home with their mother and littermates until they are ready for their permanent home. The breeder follows a strict policy of not separating a puppy from its mother until it is fully weaned and capable of living independently. This ensures the safety and ethical breeding of your new furry companion.

Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting experience but can also be overwhelming for your Basset Bleu de Gascogne. To help them adjust to their new surroundings, we have a few recommendations.

Before your furry friend arrives, create a cosy bed for them in a quiet corner of your home. You can also place a warm hot water bottle under their bed for extra comfort. Upon arrival, keep them on a leash, remain calm, and slowly introduce them to their new environment. If your puppy seems anxious, give them space to retreat to their safe spot without any pressure to interact or play.
