Breed traits and characteristics

Native to France, the Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a charming little hound breed that is slowly gaining popularity in the United Kingdom, even though they are still considered to be fairly rare. They are affectionate and energetic, yet kind and calm. While they are not as low to the ground as their Basset Hound cousins, they are similar in appearance as their bodies are longer than they are tall.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne, also known as the Fawn Brittany Basset, is a lively purebred dog known for its short, wiry, red or golden coat. These dogs have many of the great qualities of a hound, however, they are not really considered to be guard dogs. They get along well with children and other dogs. But they are unhappy when left alone for long periods because they love to be active and involved in all household activities.

This is a hardy, cheerful dog that will bring many years of joy to your family as long as you give them all the affection and love they desire.

No puppy mill pledge

10 reasons to add a Basset Fauve de Bretagne to your family

Do you have a hectic, noisy household with kids always running around? While this may sound like hell to some, this environment is heaven to an energetic and social Basset Fauve de Bretagne.

Bred to hunt in the French countryside, these hounds love being outdoors and want their owners to enjoy nature too. Whether you're going for long walks, playing fetch, or just chilling in the park, this dog is in its element when outside.

Thanks to their dense coats, this is not a dog that gets cold as soon as the temperature drops. They do well in cold climates (up to -6°C), making them well-suited to British winters.

Basset Fauve de Bretagnes don't shed much and need brushing just once a week.

While this dog would love to have a garden, they can live in a flat, providing they get their exercise needs met.

It doesn't take these hounds long to become friends with someone new. However, this doesn't mean they are terrible watchdogs; they will still alert you if a stranger is at the door.

Despite barking to alert you of someone's presence, this is not a dog that barks or yaps excessively, so you don't have to worry about the neighbours getting annoyed.

Unlike many breeds where weight gain is a concern, you don't have to worry about that much with a Basset Fauve de Bretagne. These dogs naturally keep excess weight off thanks to their high energy and exercise needs.

While their coat may not be lush and shiny, the wiry texture creates a surprisingly cute disheveled look.

During the First and Second World Wars, the number of Basset Fauve de Bretagne in France plummeted, meaning they almost did not make it to our homes in the UK.

Meet the Basset Fauve de Bretagne

Also known as the Fawn Brittany Basset, this French Basset is a smallish hound weighing 12 to 18 kg and standing 32 to 38 cm tall. Their body structure resembles the more popular Basset Hound, as both breeds have short legs and long bodies. However, hound lovers can tell them apart as the Fauve de Bretagne has slightly longer legs and a lighter coat colour than its cousin.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne's long body features a deep chest with a prominent sternum and well-rounded ribs. Their front legs are straight and well-boned, while their hindquarters are powerful and robust. Their tail is set high, thick at the base, and tapering towards the tip.

This hound's head is moderately long with a medium stop and strong underjaw. Like other hounds, they have dark noses with wide nostrils, the characteristic that allows them to smell prey from miles away.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne oval-shaped eyes are a dark hazel shade with a lively and alert expression, matching their 'always ready to play' attitude. Meanwhile, their floppy ears fold inwards, have pointed ends, and are covered by darker and finer hair than their body coat.

Talking about their coat, these hounds have dense, rough fur that can also have a wiry appearance. Their hair can be any of these three colours, fawn, wheaten, and red wheaten. They may also have some white spots on the chest.

The temperament of a Basset Fauve de Bretagne

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a highly energetic dog with an independent streak, sometimes resulting in them wandering off to follow a smell. Therefore, to avoid losing your precious pup, keep them on a leash until they are fully trained.

Despite being balls of energy, Basset Fauve de Bretagnes are gentle, kind, and loving dogs, making them a fabulous fit for families with children. They will wear each other out during playtime and curl up together at night!

Because of their playful nature, these pups can act a little mischievous sometimes, but this can easily be controlled through training. As long as you make them understand they cannot get their own way, they will stop trying to test your boundaries.

Basset Fauve de Bretagnes are highly intelligent, but they get bored easily. Thus, you should keep your training and play sessions short but frequent. Moreover, because of their desire to follow smells, one of the first things you should teach them is the "recall" command.

Best homes for a Basset Fauve de Bretagne

Because of their high energy, these dogs thrive in active, bustling households like young families, as they enjoy participating in your daily activities. However, it won't work if all household members are out of the home during the day, as Basset Fauve de Bretagnes quickly gets bored and lonely. They don't do well left alone for long periods, so they best suit families where someone stays or works from home.

These canines make lovely companions for children as their high energy is a match. However, you should always supervise every interaction to ensure no one gets hurt.

Basset Fauve de Bretagnes also do best in a home with an enclosed garden where they can release pent-up energy. Lastly, this dog is not naturally fond of being with other animals, but they can get along with other dogs if they grow up together from puppyhood.

FAQs about the Basset Fauve de Bretagne

At Pedigree Paws, we hold our breeders to high standards. All our Basset Fauve de Bretagne breeders are licensed and experienced professionals committed to ethical breeding practices. We exclusively collaborate with private breeders and steer clear of commercial breeding programs.

Our breeders prioritise the well-being of their puppies, ensuring they grow up in a nurturing home environment rather than cages. Therefore, you can be confident that each puppy from The Pedigree Paws is well-cared for and safe.

To ensure the health and happiness of each Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppy, we do the following:

● Conduct DNA health checks for genetic diseases.
● Provide five weeks of health insurance for each puppy.
● Use a reputable pet travel company to bring your new furry family member to you (if needed).

Basset Fauve de Bretagne dogs are affectionate, charming and super playful. However, they need an owner who has lots of time for them and can match their activity levels, as they don't like to be left alone for too long and require more than just a quick daily walk.

Basset Fauve de Bretagnes do particularly well with families with children due to their playful yet gentle nature. They prefer to be solo pets but can live harmoniously with another canine if they grow up together.

Our top priority at The Pedigree Paws is to put an end to unethical dog breeding. To achieve this, we work only with licensed private Basset Fauve de Bretagne breeders who operate their businesses ethically from their homes. Additionally, we thoroughly screen and perform security checks on every breeder to ensure they meet our high standards of expertise and dedication.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a robust dog that typically lives for 11 to 13 years. However, like other breeds, they may experience health issues. This is why we prioritise your dog's health and provide several measures to ensure their well-being.

These include a thorough medical exam by a licensed veterinarian, DNA testing to detect any genetic medical issues early on, essential vaccinations, and five weeks of health insurance coverage. Rest assured that we take your dog's health seriously.

Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppies should stay with their mother until they naturally wean and show signs of healthy growth and development. Depending on their progress, they are typically ready for their permanent homes at ten to twelve weeks old. If the puppy you desire is not currently available, you may inquire with the breeder about an expected availability date.

When searching for a new pet, it's crucial to verify that they come from a trustworthy breeder. We suggest meeting your Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppy and its parents face-to-face before making a purchase. No need to fret if that's not feasible; we can assist you! We can offer photos or arrange a video call with the breeder to guarantee your satisfaction.

At The Pedigree Paws, we guarantee that our Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppies are registered with the appropriate pedigree organisation in the UK. This means that the puppy meets breed standards and has no genetic ailments. You can expect to receive the original certificate from the breeder when you get your new furry friend.

We take great care in raising our Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppies in a safe and loving environment - our breeder's family home. Their well-being is our top priority, and we ensure they receive proper medical attention, love, and socialisation from the time they are born. To maintain the highest standards, we thoroughly screen and randomly inspect our breeding partners, who are all licensed and private breeders, not commercially run facilities.

Every Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppy is raised in the breeder's family home with their mother and littermates until they're ready to go to their forever homes. We have a strict policy of not separating a puppy from its mother until it's fully weaned and can live independently, ensuring your new four-legged friend's safety and ethical breeding.

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is an exhilarating experience, but it can be overwhelming for your Basset Fauve de Bretagne. We have a few recommendations to help your furry friend adjust to their new surroundings.

Before your new pup arrives, create a comfortable sleeping area for them in a peaceful location at home. Consider adding a hot water bottle to their bed for added warmth. Upon their arrival, keep them on a leash and calmly introduce them to their surroundings. If your pup appears uneasy, allow them to retreat to their designated safe space without any pressure to engage or play.
