CLEAR ALLKnown as a skilled scent hound, the Basset Griffon Vendeen Grand is short in stature but has a very long body. They have a distinct appearance with bushy eyebrows, a prominent moustache, and a beard, which adds to their charming appeal. Over the years, Basset Griffon Vendeens have become popular as family pets and canine companions across the globe. They were initially bred in the Vendée region of France to hunt game and to track the scent of rabbits and hares.
These charming dogs have long backs and short legs made for hunting. In fact, they are still used today to hunt deer, boars, rabbits, and hares. They are known to be pack dogs, so they generally get along well with other animals in the home, including cats, as long as they have grown up together. However, because of their strong predatory instincts, they will still see other animals outside of the home as potential prey.
The Basset Griffon Vendeen Grand has a confident and happy personality. Sometimes, they can be stubborn. But all in all, they make wonderful canine companions for the right owners. These dogs love to be part of a family and enjoy participating in any activity inside and outside the household. This is just one of the reasons why they are becoming a popular choice as canine companions and family pets in the United Kingdom and around the world.

While they may be called Grand, these basset hounds are classed as medium-sized, weighing 18 and 22kg. They stand 38 to 46 cm tall, making them the tallest among the Basset breeds. Likewise, the Petit breed is not that small either, typically weighing 14 to 18 kg, just a few kilos less than the Grand.
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen (or GBGV for short) has a well-balanced and elegant appearance. Their long bodies feature short but muscular and well-boned legs and large feet with firm, tight pads. They have long, well-feathered tails that are set high and have a tapered style.
Upon their strong, well-laid-back shoulders is a dome-shaped head with a square muzzle and large nostrils, an iconic characteristic of a scent hound. One of the most attractive traits about the GBGV's face is how the muzzle is covered in long hair, forming a moustache and beard.
Above their muzzle are large, dark, oval-shaped eyes, long eyebrows, and long floppy ears that fold inwards, covered in long, fine hair.
The GBGV's thick, shaggy double coat has a long topcoat and a short but dense undercoat. These hounds can have a tricolour pattern or a white base with lemon, orange, sable, grizzle, and black markings.
Like most hounds, the GBGV is highly intelligent with impressive stamina. This dog needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation, and they don't tire easily.
Providing their owner can keep up with their high energy and meet their exercise needs, Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens typically have an even disposition, with an idyllic balance between calm, friendly, and charming.
Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens have an independent streak, which can make them somewhat stubborn in training sessions. Because of this, they better suit experienced dog owners.
Moreover, as the GBGV has an incredible sense of smell and strong hunting instincts, keeping them leashed when out walking is vital. For the same reason, you should ensure your garden is fully enclosed so they cannot get out and chase the wildlife or neighbourhood cats!
Although they have some unique needs, having a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen is incredibly rewarding. They are fun-loving and social, making them an absolute joy to be around. They adore entertaining their owners but love it when their humans engage with them, too. So if you're looking for a dog to fill your days with laughter and excitement, this is it!
Because they can be a little high maintenance, Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens do best with experienced dog owners. They need someone who has time and energy for them, as this is not a dog who will be content with one short daily walk! They also thrive in a home with a garden and don't do well living in an apartment.
Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens can do well with families with children, especially older kids. Children can use their high energy to entertain the dog and vice versa. These dogs are generally gentle and tolerant with children, but like always, it's best to supervise interactions regardless.
As they are used to hunting in packs, Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens typically do well with other dogs. However, because of their high prey drives, they are not suited to homes with smaller animals, including cats.

It's been a few months since we decided to find a Chihuahua puppy to join our family, however we had issues finding a good breeder.
We contacted The Pedigree Paws and they connected us with a very unique breeder in Greece. Many videos and pictures were shown, the breeder shared with us the proof of vaccinations, deworming and her 5 generation pedigree. We were fortunate as George, the breeder was able to deliver the puppy to us personally. We are very pleased with our beautiful Athena. Thank you, The Pedigree Paws, for being truthful and transparent.
