Breed traits and characteristics

A native from Northern France, the Beauceron is a shorthaired herding breed. They were initially bred as guarding and herding dogs and served several purposes: protecting their property and their families, driving flocks, and as reliable canine companions. This is a large breed that is athletic, versatile, and active.

Beaucerons are highly intelligent and high-energy. Therefore, this breed may not be the best match for first-time dog owners as they need regular daily exercise and mental stimulation. Moreover, they need an outlet for their high energy. So, daily walks are a must, as well as the freedom to run in a large backyard or garden.

These protective canines make good watchdogs and guardians. They have a strong dominant streak so they need an owner that can be firm and consistent with training. If trained properly, with a lot of love and patience, the Beauceron can become an ideal canine companion. It is worth noting that this breed can be territorial around other pets, so careful introductions are essential.

The Beauceron will thrive on a farm or in a home with a large, well-fenced yard so they can run around whenever they want. These active dogs are not really suitable for apartment living.

If you have an active lifestyle and are looking for a robust, loyal, and energetic companion, the Beauceron may be the breed for you.

Meet The Beauceron

Beaucerons are a large breed weighing 30 to 45 kg and standing 61 to 70 cm tall. They boast a noble appearance, partly due to their glossy black and tan coat, similar to a Dobermann's. Their bodies are sleek but muscular, with strong legs, powerful shoulders, and well-sprung ribs.

The Beauceron's head is well-proportioned to its body, with a flat or slightly rounded skull. They have strong jaws, dark muzzles and oval-shaped eyes with well-pigmented rims. Their undersized ears are held dropped when relaxed and upright when alert.

Although the Beauceron's top coat appears shiny, it feels rough and coarse, particularly on the body. However, their undercoat is much softer and finer. The classic Beauceron coat will be black and tan, but some dogs will have a harlequin patterning (grey and black patches).

The temperament of a Beauceron

Beaucerons are known for their intelligence, high energy, and protective nature. They are typically not recommended to first-time dog owners as they are relatively high maintenance regarding their exercise and interaction needs. Still, as they are relatively easy to train, if you have plenty of time and patience for this pup, you will indeed develop an excellent relationship with them.

Providing they can burn off their excess energy (preferably with an enclosed garden and numerous daily walks), Beaucerons are typically calm in the house. They are also known to be gentle towards children, making them a fab candidate for a family dog.

Still, because of Beauceron's background, these dogs love being outdoors. Therefore, they are a better fit for families in the countryside rather than in the city.

Beaucerons are athletic, agile, and hardworking, often doing well in dog sports and agility courses. However, like with many breeds, harsh training methods do not work with Beaucerons. Instead, positive reinforcement and respect are key to successful Beauceron training.

As herding dogs, Beacerons have high prey drives and can catch small animals instantly. Therefore, keeping them leashed when out walking until they are fully trained is essential.

Best homes for a Beauceron

As mentioned, Beaucerons are made for country life and will likely not thrive in a city with minimal green spaces and no garden. This is not an apartment-friendly dog by any means.

Having an owner with ample time to play and exercise them is equally vital for a Beauceron's well-being and happiness. So, if you lead a busy lifestyle and want to do nothing but lay on the couch when you get home from work, this isn't the right dog for you.

The Beauceron's calm and gentle nature makes them excellent companions to children. However, their size and weight make them better suited to older kids. Beaucerons can also live harmoniously with other dogs, though their chances of this are much higher if introduced while young. Lastly, due to their high prey drive, they are not a good fit for homes with cats and other small animals.

FAQs about the Beauceron

At Pedigree Paws, we uphold high ethical standards when breeding Beauceron puppies. Firstly, we only collaborate with licensed and experienced breeders who share our values and prioritise the well-being of their puppies. Secondly, our breeders maintain a clean and spacious home environment to provide the best possible care.

We understand that your Beauceron puppy is not just a pet but a beloved family member. That's why we take extra measures to ensure our breeders provide each puppy with an excellent start in life through various checks and procedures. Our commitment to providing top care and attention assures they can lead a long and healthy life with you.

Beauceron make lovely companions for many families, including those with older kids, as their high energy is typically a great match. In addition, Beaucerons are typically calm and gentle towards people and children.

Still, every Beauceron needs two essential things: plenty of mental and physical stimulation and access to the outdoors. Therefore, they do best in a country home with an enclosed garden to let off steam rather than in a city apartment.

Similarly, you should only consider this dog if you know you will have ample time and energy for them. Beaucerons are not content with a short walk once a day; they need multiple play sessions, long walks, and mental stimulation through training or agility courses. For this reason, Beaucerons do best with owners who have previous experience with dogs and are available to meet their high needs.

Our mission at The Pedigree Paws is to eliminate unethical dog breeding practices in the UK and beyond. To work towards achieving this, we exclusively work with experienced and ethical Beauceron breeders who raise their puppies in their own homes. We employ a thorough screening process to ensure our partners meet our high standards, including comprehensive background checks and security screenings for all potential breeders.

Beauceron dogs are a hardy, well-established breed that can live for 10 to 12 years with proper care. However, there are some health issues they can be susceptible to, such as Bloat, Hip Dysplasia or Osteochondritis Dessicans (OCD).

Fortunately, we offer numerous health services to ensure your Beauceron is in top health. These include:

● A detailed health check-up by a licensed vet
● A DNA test to rule out any genetic health issues that are common with this breed
● The necessary core vaccinations
● Five weeks of health insurance

Our top priority is the well-being of our Beauceron puppies. To guarantee a healthy and well-balanced pup, we keep them with their mother until they naturally wean. Typically, our puppies are ready to go to their permanent homes when they reach ten to twelve weeks old, but this may vary based on their individual development.

If the specific puppy you're interested in isn't currently available, please don't hesitate to reach out to the breeder for updates.

Finding a trustworthy breeder can be daunting when getting a new pet. Meeting the breeder in person and seeing the puppy and its parents is ideal. But, we understand this may not always be feasible.

Don't worry; we're here to help you in any way possible. We can send you photos of your Beauceron puppy or arrange a video call with the breeder. Our top priority is to ensure you feel confident and satisfied with your choice.

When you purchase a Beauceron from The Pedigree Paws, we ensure that the puppy is registered with the appropriate pedigree organisation in the UK. This registration is important because it indicates that the breeder follows the recognised standards for the breed and that the puppy is not affected by any genetic disorders.

You'll receive the original documents from the breeder when you take your new furry friend home, giving you confidence in your pet's health and pedigree status.

At The Pedigree Paws, we offer only healthy and well-tempered Beauceron puppies. We can ensure this as we only collaborate with licensed and experienced breeders who raise their puppies in a home environment. They offer the puppies excellent medical care, love, and socialisation. We also conduct strict screenings and random inspections to ensure the puppies receive top-notch care.

Our Beauceron puppies are raised by experienced breeders in a loving family environment with their mother and siblings. We prioritise the welfare of our puppies, so we avoid separating them from their mother too soon. This ethical approach ensures that your new puppy will be healthy, well-behaved, and ready to join your family after being fully weaned.

Although courageous, Beaucerons are not the most sociable dogs, so they might be a little wary when they first meet you. But don't worry; we have some recommendations to help them feel at home as soon as possible.

Prepare for your Beauceron's arrival by creating a comfortable resting area in a quiet part of your home. Ensure the room is warm and has soft lighting, fresh water, food, and perhaps a soft teddy bear!

When introducing your Beauceron to its new home, do so slowly and calmly, keeping them on a leash to establish boundaries. If they appear nervous, let them retreat to their designated safe space for as long as they need. Remember to be patient and understanding as your new companion adjusts to their new surroundings and human companions.
