The Bedlington Terrier is one of the oldest breeds of terriers in existence. They were initially bred in Northern England. However, because of their notable skill as efficient hunters, they quickly established themselves in multiple regions. They may look cuddly like lambs, but they have the heart of a magnificent lion.
Bedlington Terriers love being part of everyday activities. Moreover, they adore being the centre of attention and will happily play the clown just to get it. These charming dogs are friendly towards guests and will entertain them with their silly antics. According to Bedlington Terrier owners, they have intelligent judgment, so they make excellent watchdogs.
The Bedlington Terrier is a good choice for those who suffer from allergies because they have low-shedding coats. However, this comes with a price because these charming dogs are pretty high maintenance in the grooming department.
Today, these beautiful dogs are a popular choice as family pets because of their kind, affectionate, and sweet natures. Being a true terrier breed, they also love the outdoors. So, give them plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy.

The Bedlington Terrier is a small to medium-sized dog, weighing 8 to 10 kg and standing 38 to 45 cm tall. One of this breed's most distinctive physical traits is its narrow oval/pear-shaped head covered in curly white hair, typically forming a unique silky topknot.
Their narrow heads feature long, tapering jaws with tight lips, large nostrils, small eyes, and moderate-sized low-set droopy ears. While the rest of the Bedlington Terrier's head features curly wool-like fur, their ears are covered in short, fine hair with a fringe of silky hair on the tips.
This dog's body is well-proportioned with straight front legs, long back legs and sloping shoulders. Their coats are thick and curly but not wiry, and the hairs stand away from the body. While white (sandy) is the most popular coat colour, they can come in several shades, including blue, liver, or a mix of one of these with tan markings.
Bedlington Terriers have a very graceful and gentle appearance compared to other working dogs, but this simply serves as a disguise for their incredible hunting skills. Their small size and woolly fur make them look more like a lamb than a canine, especially the white variety.
While they may look like sheep, Bedlington Terriers act like your standard Terrier in several ways. They are intelligent yet slightly stubborn and highly energetic. That being said, Bedlington's are typically calmer than other Terrier dogs.
Bedlington Terriers are sociable, happy-go-lucky pups that adore being the centre of attention. They love entertaining people and thrive from seeing their humans laugh at their playful antics.
While gentle towards their families, Bedlington Terriers are known for being highly protective,
making them excellent watchdogs. As fairly big barkers, they will bark to alert you if someone is outside.
But as these dogs are so intelligent, they are good at gauging if someone is a threat. If they see you greet someone in a friendly manner, they will instantly understand that person is not a foe and will likely seek to become friends with them themselves.
One of the most important things to consider before getting this dog is its high energy levels. Their working background means they need a lot of physical exercise and mental stimulation. They do best when they receive a combination of long walks and challenging play sessions.
Another thing to note about Bedlingtons is that they can display that classic "Terrier stubbornness" during training. While it can make them slightly challenging to train, they typically respond well to positive reinforcement methods and prefer short and fun sessions.
You can curb their strong hunting instinct to some degree during training, but you cannot eliminate it. The main thing is to focus on developing a solid recall to prevent them from chasing and following scents they pick up while out on walks. Keep them leashed on your walks until fully trained.
Bedlington Terriers make lovely family pets due to their loyal and sociable nature. However, they need owners with the time and energy to meet their needs and who are willing to take them on long walks and engage in frequent play sessions.
Bedlington Terriers can make fab playmates for children of all ages. Thanks to their small size, you don't have to worry about them squashing toddlers. Still, You should always supervise interactions nonetheless.
Bedlington Terriers can also do well with other dogs, but this works best if they are raised together from puppyhood. If you introduce a Bedlington to another dog later in life, they may try to take the alpha role, especially if the new dog is of the same sex.
