Breed traits and characteristics

The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is one of four shepherd breeds native to Belgium. These include the Tervueren, Malinois, Groenendael, and Laekenois. All of which were named after the region they were first bred in. The Malinois breed was initially created to be a hard-working herding dog and protector. As a result, they have become known for their high intelligence, strong work ethic, and desire to stay active. They have been highly prized in Belgium for decades, however, more recently, these handsome dogs are becoming recognised the world over.

These medium-sized dogs resemble German Shepherds in appearance and temperament. They are generally fawn-coloured with black masks and a willing temperament. This has seen them utilised as drug detection and police dogs the world over. In fact, they can easily be confused with German Shepherds, especially if you are not familiar with this rarer breed. However, Malinois are generally more compact and active. They also shed less.

The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is affectionate and can form strong bonds with their owners. However, these dogs have strong instincts so they need an owner that can devote plenty of time to training. Moreover, early socialisation is crucial to ensure your pup grows up into a well-balanced, confident, and obedient adult. Through proper training and handling, the Belgian Shepherd Malinois can excel in different canine activities. They can even be used as assistance and search and rescue dogs.

10 reasons to add a Belgian Shepherd (Malinois) to your family

The Belgian Malinois is an affectionate, people-loving dog who immediately forms ever-lasting bonds with its owners.

Whether you're home alone or walking in a dodgy area, you can rest assured that you'll be totally secure with the protective Malinois by your side.

While these intelligent dogs require training, they quickly learn commands and tricks.

This dog's intelligence combined with their eagerness to please means many Malinois owners manage to train their pups to help them with minor household or garden tasks.

Although bred to serve as herding dogs, Belgian Shepherds make excellent police canines, guard dogs, and military assistance animals.

If your goal is to become more active, the Belgian Malinois is a great dog to have around. They need at least 40 minutes of interactive exercise daily, so you'll be fit in no time, walking, hiking, running, and playing catch.

If you're not looking for a workout buddy, the Malinois can serve as your child's new best friend and playmate. These dogs are typically a fab match for older children and will wear each other out every day.

While they might be high maintenance in the exercise department, you won't have to spend much time grooming this dog. Typically, a weekly brush is enough for this short-haired canine.

The Malinois is blessed with a longer lifespan than the other Belgian Shepherd breeds, living for up to 14 or 15 years with proper care.

If you adore the popular German Shepherd breed but prefer a smaller dog, the Malinois is perfect. Both breeds have the same coat patterning and colour and a similar build, but the Malinois is noticeably smaller.

Meet The Belgian Shepherd Malinois

The Belgian Malinois is a medium-sized dog, but there is a noticeable difference in the size of the females versus the males. Females typically stand 55-60 cm tall, while males are 60-66 cm. Similarly, females weigh between 18 and 27 kg while males can be up to 36 kilograms but rarely less than 27.

Both males and females have an elegant yet robust body. Their upper bodies are broad and well-muscled, while the rear slopes slightly. Their legs are powerful with relatively large feet, though the back feet are oval-shaped while the front feet are round.

Like their cousins, the Belgian Tervuren, these dogs have well-chiselled heads, adding to their elegant appearance. They have triangular-shaped ears held high on the head and almond-shaped brown eyes with black rims.

Malinois have double fawn-coloured coats with black face masks and short straight hair. Shades of red and grey are also accepted under the breed standard. They often also have a black overlay on the shoulders, back, and ribs, though this is more pronounced in the males.

The Malinois's tail has thicker and darker hair than the rest of the body. The coat is also typically thicker around the neck, forming a collar and on the hindlegs, creating a fringed look.

The temperament of a Belgian Shepherd Malinois

Like all four Belgian shepherd breeds, the Malinois is a highly energetic and hard-working canine. Their protective and devoted nature makes them excellent family pets and guard dogs. They are known to build strong ties with their owners, who they like to stay close to at all times, and are always eager to please.

The Belgian Malinois's high energy levels mean they need lots of physical activity (at least 40 minutes per day.). Thus, they best suit active people who take them out on their hikes and runs.

Mental stimulation is just as essential as the Malinois' bright mind can get bored quickly. Thus, you should schedule regular games, puzzles, and training sessions along with physical exercise.

You should also note that training is required to control this dog's protective and territorial streak. Without training, they can develop unwanted behaviours like chasing or showing aggression toward other dogs. So it is best to sign them up for obedience classes.

Best homes for a Belgian Shepherd Malinois

Because of the Belgian Malinois's high energy and training needs, these dogs are not recommended for first-time dog owners or people who lead busy lifestyles. Instead, they thrive with people who lead an active lifestyle and can effectively train dogs.

As highly affectionate pets, Malinois become incredibly close to everyone they live with, including children. However, they prove best suited to homes with older children as they can be too boisterous for younger children, even with training.

Like other Belgian Shepherd dogs, the Malinois will live harmoniously with any cats or dogs it grows us with from puppyhood. However, they may show dominance, possessiveness, and even aggression to new pets introduced to the household when they are fully grown.

FAQs about the Belgian Shepherd (Malinois)

The Pedigree Paws focuses on breeding Belgian Malinois Shepherd dogs to the utmost ethical and health standards. We only partner with licensed, regulated, and experienced breeders who share our values and prioritise the well-being of both puppies and breeding dogs. Our puppies are raised in a clean and spacious home environment, as we believe they are not just pets but cherished family members.

To ensure every puppy receives the best possible start in life, we take several measures. This includes arranging health checks and vaccinations before they are sent to their new homes, offering health insurance, and working with the best pet transport company in the UK.

The Belgian Malinois Shepherd is affectionate, loyal, and protective. However, the most important thing to note about these dogs is that they have high energy levels and, thus, need lots of daily exercise (a minimum of 40 minutes). Because of this, they are best suited to outdoor-loving people who take the pup on daily walks and runs.

What's more, as this is a breed that requires thorough training, they are not recommended for first-time dog owners. Regular and consistent training is necessary to control their herding instincts and dominant behaviour, especially around kids or other animals.

Our mission at The Pedigree Paws is to put an end to unethical dog breeding practices, not only in the UK but also globally. We work to achieve this by partnering exclusively with reputable Belgian Malinois breeders who raise their puppies in their family homes rather than in commercial breeding facilities.

We maintain strict standards by conducting thorough background and security checks on all potential breeders before and during our partnership. You can rest assured that we are fully committed to ethical breeding practices and will continue to uphold them.

The Belgian Malinois is a hardy breed that can live up to 14 or 15 years with proper care, longer than the other Belgian Shepherd breeds. However, they are not invincible and may be susceptible to some genetic health issues, like Hip Dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).

Plus, as the Malinois is a rare breed, finding a top-quality breeder is essential to ensuring you receive a fully healthy and even-tempered pup. But with The Pedigree Paws, this is no concern as we offer various medical services to ensure your Malinois is in top health. These include:

● A thorough health examination carried out by a licensed and approved vet
● A DNA test checking for genetic health problems specific to this breed
● Core vaccinations (their vaccine booklet will be provided)
● Five weeks of health insurance

At The Pedigree Paws, our main focus is on the well-being and contentment of our Belgian Malinois puppies. Because of this, we strictly ensure they remain with their mother and wean naturally.

Typically, our puppies are ready to leave for their forever homes around the age of ten to twelve weeks, but this timeline may differ based on their individual development. If you are interested in a Malinois puppy that is not yet available, kindly contact the breeder for additional details.

Finding a trustworthy pet breeder can be a daunting task. Ideally, you should visit the breeder in person to meet the puppy and its parents, but that may not always be possible, such as if you live too far away.

If this is the case, don't worry, as we're here to assist. We can provide photos of your Malinois puppy and schedule a video call with the breeder. Our goal is to ensure that you feel satisfied and confident in your decision.

At The Pedigree Paws, we make sure that every Belgian Malinois puppy is registered with the appropriate pedigree organisation before they go to their new home. This registration is crucial for maintaining established breed standards and ensuring each puppy is free from inherited illnesses.

You can rest assured that you will receive the original registration papers when you take your new furry friend home. These papers serve as evidence of your pet's health and pedigree status, providing you with complete peace of mind.

At Pedigree Paws, we provide healthy and well-tempered Belgian Malinois puppies raised in a loving home environment. Our ethical breeders ensure that the puppies stay with their mother until they are weaned and provide any necessary medical care. Additionally, our puppies start socializing right away, making it easier for you to integrate them into your household.

We raise our Belgian Malinois puppies in a loving family environment with their mother and siblings. Our expert breeders prioritise the happiness and health of the puppies and mother dogs by keeping them together until the pups are independent. This is essential to guarantee that every puppy becomes a friendly and healthy companion.

When bringing a Belgian Malinois puppy into your home, note that they may initially be cautious of you and perhaps a little scared. However, there are some proven techniques that can help your new canine friend settle in quickly.

First and foremost, create a comfortable and peaceful sleeping area for your pup before they arrive. Make sure the room is cosy, has an ideal temperature, and plenty of fresh water, yummy food, and a soft toy.

When introducing your Belgian Malinois to their new environment, take things slowly and remain calm and in control. We also recommend you keep them on a leash during the initial tour to establish yourself as the leader, which is vital for a breed with dominance tendencies like this.
