Breed traits and characteristics

Known for their distinctive look and proud, independent spirit, the Chow Chow is an ancient breed that originated in China. They were originally developed for a range of jobs including hunting, pulling carts, herding, and for protection. Today, these canines are often referred to as being catlike in personality. They combine the nobility of a lion, the appeal of a teddy bear, the humour of a panda, the grace and independence of a feline, and the loyalty of a dog.

Chow Chows are refined, dignified, and devoted to their owners. However, they are known to be fairly aloof with strangers. If these loyal dogs are raised with children, they will accept them happily. But, like many other breeds, they do not tolerate rough handling well, so always teach children how to handle dogs with appropriate care.

Chow Chows are strong-willed so they may not be the best choice of pet for first-time dog owners. However, with the right attention, love, and training, these dogs can quickly become much-loved, devoted members of the household.

10 reasons to add a Chow Chow to your family

If you love dogs with fluffy coats, you'll instantly fall in love with a Chow Chow. They are so adorable you'll want to pick them up and cuddle them all the time, though you may struggle as they are not lightweight!

Chow Chows see themselves as your protectors, so do not act needy. They do fine when left alone for short periods, but if you're out all day, they may worry about your safety!

You can sleep easy at night knowing this canine won't let any strangers into the home. Moreover, they will ensure no harm comes to you when you're out walking together.

Chow Chows have moderate energy needs and do not need constant access to a safe outside space. As long as they get daily walks and playtime, they can live happily in homes without gardens.

The Chow Chow's high intelligence means they quickly learn to let you know they need the loo.

Chow Chow owners often comment on how clean these dogs are and their lack of smell, which is just one of their cat-like traits.

According to ancient Chinese legend, the Chow Chow got its blue/black tongue at the time of creation by licking drops of the blue as the sky was painted.

Chow Chows were not made for prolonged, rigorous activity, so they tire reasonably quickly. Generally, 20-minute walks are acceptable for this breed.

Besides looking like a bear, rough-coated Chow Chows have a magnificent mane, which sets them apart from other dogs.

If you're looking for a faithful furry companion for the next 10 to 15 years, a Chow Chow is undoubtedly an excellent choice.

Meet the Chow Chow

Chow Chows are medium to large dogs. They are not super tall, standing at approximately 17 to 20 inches. However, their muscular physique makes them pretty hefty, so they can weigh anywhere between 40 and 70 pounds.

Their shoulders, in particular, are very muscular and well-developed, and they have deep chests with well-sprung rib cages. In addition, their hindquarters are powerful, allowing them to run at high speed, their tails are set high, and their feet are small, round, and cat-like.

Chow Chows have large, flat heads with long muzzles and wide, black noses. They have dark, oval-shaped eyes, small ears slightly rounded at the tips, strong jaws, and muscular, short necks.

Aside from their solid and sturdy bodies, their distinct coat is easily one of the best things about the Chow Chow's appearance. They boast thick, double coats, which can be smooth or rough. It consists of a thick, dense outer coat and a woolly undercoat, giving them a fluffy bear-like appearance.

Rough-coated Chow Chows have significantly thicker hair around their necks. This results in a lion-like appearance, making them look like a dog, bear, and lion hybrid. Those with rough coats can also have extensive breechings on the backs of the thighs. The Chow Chow's fur can be one of several colours; black, blue, cream, fawn, red, or white.

The temperament of a Chow Chow

Chow Chows are incredibly loyal and protective. They form close bonds with their family and have the desire to keep their loved ones safe, so they serve as excellent protective guard dogs. However, this breed is known to form a particularly strong bond with one chosen family member.

Chow Chows are proud and independent; they are more reserved and laid-back than social and outgoing. This is why they are often described as cat-like in nature. They typically do OK when left alone for short periods. Still, because they build close relationships with their owners, like all dogs, they can suffer when separated for a long time.

As working dogs with impressive skill sets, Chow Chows are highly intelligent. However, they can be pretty stubborn, which does make training challenging. In addition, these canines can quickly become dominant and strong-willed, so it's essential to firmly establish who the boss is. Because of this, they are best suited to dog owners with previous experience.

While Chow Chows are loving and loyal to their owners, they are naturally wary of strangers. Unlike some other breeds, it can take these dogs a while to warm up to new people, and many will not accept petting from strangers.

Early socialisation is vital to help them feel more comfortable around people. Even so, remember they were bred for protection, so they will never become super friendly, sociable dogs who instantly fall in love with new people.

Best homes for a Chow Chow

Chow Chows do well in many types of homes, including with families, couples, and single people. However, they may be challenging for first-time dog owners as they can be stubborn and try to claim dominance if you appear weak.

Chow Chows typically do well in a home with children if they grow up around them and receive ample socialisation at an early age. That being said, they are a better fit for families with older children as they don't tolerate rough handling well. Moreover, as heavy dogs, they can easily knock over small kids.

Lastly, as one of their roles was to hunt, they have maintained a strong instinct to chase small animals. Thus, if you have pet cats, rabbits, or small dogs, they may see them as prey. Chow Chows typically do best as solo pets. If you want to pair them with another dog, they tend to get on best with canines of the opposite gender.

FAQs about the Chow Chow

At The Pedigree Paws, we partner with only the most reputable Chow Chow breeders who have been fully vetted. Aside from being certified and registered with pedigree breeding associations, they have years of experience with this particular breed. Thus, you'll have peace of mind that your breeder knows how to best care for these puppies and operates with their best interests at heart.

We also run a series of checks to ensure that our Chow Chow puppies are raised in a clean, comfortable, and ethical environment free from stress, neglect or abuse. This is important to ensure your Chow Chow is healthy and will have an even temperament. Note that we do not (and never will) work with any puppy mills, pet farms, or similar.

While Chow Chows make great companions for many people, there are a few considerations with this breed. Firstly, as they can be challenging to train, they are best suited to dog owners with previous experience. Secondly, as they do not accept rough handling, they may not be the best choice for families with young children.

The good news is that Chow Chows can be left alone for short to medium periods and don't need to go everywhere with you. Moreover, they don't have high energy levels, so their day-to-day maintenance is manageable.

Everyone at The Pedigree Paws is a pet owner, so needless to say, we would never support unethical breeding or pet buying scams. We created The Pedigree Paws as a way to combat the unreliable and dishonest pedigree breeders we were coming across when looking for our furry companions.

Our mission is to provide a trustworthy and easy-to-use platform for puppy lovers in the UK and Europe. So you can come to The Pedigree Paws website with complete confidence that you will find a healthy and well-tempered furry companion. To demonstrate this, we have a comprehensive application process that all breeders must pass in order to work with us.

Chow Chows are a well-established breed that has been around for a long time. They are generally healthy, but like all pedigree breeds, there are certain diseases that they are prone to genetically.

We do everything we can to minimise the risk of your new puppy having any genetic diseases. For example, we require all our breeders to run DNA health tests on their Chow Chow breeding dogs and puppies. We do not allow the sale of any puppy that has not been tested or health checked.

In addition, our breeders will also prepare your Chow Chow for the healthiest start in life by getting them a thorough health checkup with their vet. This includes vaccinating them against the most common canine diseases.

Our breeders will keep the puppies with their mum in their own home for the first eight to twelve weeks of their life. This initial period is vital for their growth and health; we do not support puppies being separated from their mother too soon. This is because puppies who stay with their mothers for at least eight weeks have a much lower likelihood of developing development issues or contracting diseases.

As early socialisation is crucial with Chow Chows, the breeder uses this time to familiarise them with humans. They will let you know the exact date your Chow Chow is ready, as it depends on the individual puppy's development.

It's normal to have concerns when handing over money for any pedigree puppy. To help ease your mind that your new puppy will be healthy and even-tempered, you can set up a video call with the breeder before making the purchase. This will allow you to virtually meet the puppy, see them with its parents, and observe its condition before you make a decision.

All certified, reputable breeders provide proof of the puppy's pedigree registration. Thus, you'll have no concerns regarding this, as all our breeders provide official documents detailing the puppy's breed. The documentation will come from one of the leading pedigree dog organisations, such as The Kennel Club, where your puppy will have been registered.

Absolutely, our thorough application procedure is designed to sift out not only unethical breeders but any that do not meet our high standards. As a result, we can say with total confidence that we have the very best Chow Chow breeders on our books.

Moreover, along with our in-house application process, all our breeders meet the conditions of top international pedigree associations like The Kennel Club.

Chow Chows are known to be reasonably shy towards strangers and can take time to warm up to new people. Knowing this, our breeders help them get as familiar and comfortable with humans as possible by raising them in their own homes.

In this family home environment, your new people will be around people from birth, developing a positive association with humans. And, of course, this is the best environment for puppies regarding their health and well-being. All puppies stay in close contact with the mother dog, receiving ample milk and vital care. They also wean naturally and are only taken from the mother once they appear 100% ready.

Getting a new puppy is an exciting but scary adventure. It's normal for puppies to be a little scared or shy when they first arrive, so don't feel disheartened if they take a while to warm up to you. That being said, there are certain things you can do to help them settle.

Prepare everything for their arrival, including a comfy bed in a dark, quiet environment. It's best to bring your new puppy here when they arrive rather than immediately introducing them to the entire family, which can cause overwhelm. Because of this breed's nature, we also suggest keeping them on their leash initially, so they understand who is in charge.
