Breed traits and characteristics

Known for their white coats and lemon or orange markings, Clumber Spaniels are the largest member of the spaniel family. These are very unique dogs with thoughtful, endearing expressions and a relaxed, gentleman-like disposition.

They are thought to have originated in France more than 200 years ago before they were imported into England. The name ‘Clumber Spaniel’ is believed to refer to Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire where these dogs were bred extensively. These gentle dogs were initially developed to find and retrieve game birds for hunters. Nowadays, Clumber Spaniels are still exceptional gundogs, and many compete in field trials. Because of this trait, these dogs adore being outside and will follow a scent relentlessly!

These affectionate and sweet-natured dogs thrive in human companionship. In fact, they love to be involved in everything that goes on in the home. However, they can be wary around strangers. Clumber Spaniels are playful, dignified, mischievous, intelligent, and sometimes stubborn! With the right training, these dogs can make incredibly attentive, lovable canine companions for any family.

10 reasons to add a Clumber Spaniel to your family

Clumber Spaniels aren’t aggressive. As adults, they are typically well-mannered and laid back and will always be polite to your guests.

Because of their kind nature, Clumber Spaniels perform well as service animals. They are often trained under the PAT Dog scheme to be companions of patients in hospitals and residents of retirement homes.

If you raise a Clumber Spaniel puppy with a child, a beautiful friendship will likely blossom. The pup will see the human kid as its sibling and care for him by licking and cuddling.

Clumber Spaniels have low to moderate energy levels, so they can live in a flat or a house without a garden.

Likewise, a 20- to 30-minute daily walk is usually sufficient for their physical well-being.

Clumber Spaniels are not known to bark a lot, so you won't have to worry about neighbours complaining or getting woken up at night.

These canines can be quite the couch potato and will never say no to an evening lazing on the couch with their owner. However, as they are large dogs, you may need more space for yourself as they love to stretch out!

They are a very distinct type of spaniel and are not easy to find. Thus if you're after a unique 'hidden-gem' dog, this is it!

Clumber spaniels were a favoured companion dog for many royal families in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Finally, their thick, soft coat always feels fantastic, and their large size makes the perfect snuggle buddy.

Meet the Clumber Spaniel

These medium-large dogs have low bodies and short legs, standing between 18 to 20 inches tall. In addition, males are much heftier than females, weighing up to 85 pounds, compared to females, who are typically between 55 and 70 pounds.

Clumber Spaniels are well-boned, muscular canines with noticeably large heads. They have square muzzles, well-developed upper lips, and large leaf-shaped ears covered in fur. Their eyes are full of expression with heavy brows above them. Their necks are long and powerful, sitting atop muscular, sloping shoulders.

Their solid body has well-sprung ribs, a deep chest, strong hindquarters, and powerful back legs, made for chasing down birds with extreme speed and precise timing.

Aside from their body structure, their coat is unique too. They have long, silky, straight hair with lots of feathering, especially on the legs and chest. However, the most distinctive trait of their coat is the colouring, which is always a two-toned shade. They are typically white with lemon or orange markings, mostly on and around their head and ears.

Some Clumber Spaniels have a frill below the neck, sometimes called an apron, because of its appearance. Their long thick coat means they shed heavily, so daily brushing is necessary with this breed.

The temperament of a Clumber Spaniel

Like many other breeds, Clumber Spaniels are incredibly loving and loyal, forming close attachments with their owners. Their personalities can vary from reserved to social. Still, most will act standoffish to new people until they feel comfortable enough to engage.

Clumber Spaniels are intelligent, eager to please and gentle canines, which makes them a good choice for first-time dog owners. Because of their delicate nature, they are also typically good around children. However, they should always be supervised around small kids as they could easily knock them over with their hefty weight.

Because of their working background, Clumber Spaniels can have a strong instinct to work and will look for ways to "help out" their humans. In addition, they have an inquisitive nature, always sniffing around and investigating new scents.

As puppies, Clumber Spaniels can be a bit boisterous and mischievous. Luckily, this streak usually lessens as they get older.

Because they get very attached to their owners, this breed is not one to cope well when left alone. Thus, separation anxiety is common in Clumber Spaniels, so they do best with someone who is home often.

Clumber Spaniels have some quirky perks that will surely make you giggle. For example, they will carry their favourite toy wherever they go, like a child taking their favourite teddy everywhere. This is likely due to their retriever background. They also have a tendency to drool when they get excited.

While sweet and gentle, Clumber Spaniels can be determined and stubborn as they like to get their own way. Therefore, it's essential to show them you are the leader immediately to avoid unwanted behaviour.

Best homes for a Clumber Spaniel

Because of their loyal, gentle, and affectionate nature, Clumber Spaniels make excellent family pets. They are great with children of all ages, but you'll need to supervise them around small kids because of their sheer size and weight.

They generally live fine with other animals if they have been brought up with them. However, introducing an adult Clumber Spaniel to new animals can be tricky as they are naturally wary of strangers - both two-legged and four-legged.

FAQs about the Clumber Spaniel

We partner with respected and trusted Clumber Spaniel breeders in the UK and Europe with years of experience working with their chosen breed. We cautiously choose the breeders we work with to ensure all puppies are being raised in a safe, loving, and ethical environment. We do not work with any form of commercial breeding facility, such as puppy mills or pet farms.

The Pedigree Paws proudly stands for ethical dog breeding. Thus, you can have total confidence that you have made an ethical and trustworthy decision by choosing a Clumber Spaniel puppy through us.

Clumber Spaniels have low to medium energy levels, so they don't require much exercise and live happily in homes without gardens. Because they are so gentle and loving, they make excellent companions for families, including those with children. If a Clumber Spaniel puppy grows up alongside a child, it can develop a wonderful friendship.

We know that not all pedigree breeders are reliable and ethical. So as pet owners ourselves, we created The Pedigree Paws to provide a trustworthy place for animal lovers to find new pet companions.

To demonstrate our trustworthiness, we require all breeders to follow a comprehensive application process and meet strict requirements to work with us.

Like all pedigree breeds, Clumber Spaniels have genetic predispositions to some diseases and illnesses. However, we do everything we can to ensure the Clumber Spaniel puppies you buy from The Pedigree Paws are as healthy as can be.

To do this, we require our breeders to meet several requirements regarding their puppies' health. One of the most essential requirements is to run a DNA test on their breeding dogs and the puppies they produce. DNA tests show any genetic diseases they carry; thus, this check minimises the health risks your new puppy will have.

We also require breeders to take each puppy to a vet for a complete health checkup and vaccinations. They also microchip them, saving you one less task.

All Pedigree Paws puppies stay with their mum in the breeder's home until they are between eight to twelve weeks old. A minimum of eight weeks is vital as puppies separated before this age are much more likely to develop health or development issues.

While your new puppy is receiving the love and care it needs from its mother, the breeder will use this time to start the socialisation process, getting them familiar with being around people. While you are waiting, the breeder will keep you updated on their development and give an exact date that your Clumber Spaniel will be ready.

It's natural to have concerns when getting a new pedigree puppy, and you want to do what you can to ensure it has good health and temperament. To help with this, we will assist with setting up a video call with the breeder before you make any payment. This allows you to see your new Clumber Spaniel and its parents and observe their health and temperament.

Yes, you will receive proof of your puppy's pedigree registration with one of the leading pedigree organisations, such as The Kennel Club. All our breeders undergo the registration process before listing their puppies for sale. They will send the original documents with your new puppy. Thus, you'll have a guarantee that your Clumber Spaniel is purebred.

Absolutely; our thorough application procedure and strict requirements mean we only have the very best Clumber Spaniel breeders on our website. In addition, all our breeders meet the conditions of the top international pedigree associations.

We only work with private breeders who raise the puppies in their homes and are passionate about what they do, rather than commercial breeding facilities simply looking to make money.

It is vital for puppies to be raised in a family home environment, as this way, they are already familiar with home life when they come to you. This environment also allows them to receive socialisation with people, which helps them learn how to behave around you from the get-go.

Moreover, this is the best environment for their health, as they can receive vital care from their mother in a safe and clean space. Moreover, unlike in commercial breeding facilities, all our puppies stay with their mothers and wean when they are ready, not when a human decides.

Whether it's your first or fifth puppy, you'll likely want to ensure you are fully prepared for their arrival and have everything you need.

One thing we recommend is placing a comfy bed in a dark environment away from any activity and noise. Then, when your puppy arrives, bring them here to 'decompress' for a while, as it will likely be a big and scary change.

Also, avoid the temptation to unleash your puppy straight away. Instead, when you show your pup around their new home, keep them leashed so they instantly learn who the leader is.
