Breed traits and characteristics

The Collie dog breed is a native of Scotland. They were bred in the Scottish Highlands and northern England to herd sheep. Today, these graceful, intelligent dogs make great canine companions for families, as well as show dogs. They are also still revered by farmers for their impressive herding abilities.

Rough Collies are described as robust, devoted, loving, approachable, and quick in both mind and body. Rough-coated Collies have gorgeous long coats that flow behind them as they run. Their heads are wedge-shaped with a delicate bone structure. Despite, the similarities in appearance, Shetland and Border Collies are different dog breeds entirely.

Rough Collies are delicate and bright dogs. They are known for their undying devotion and their exceptional ability to predict their owners’ needs. They are also highly affectionate with their families. As a result, they do not like being left alone for long periods. Give them plenty of love, attention, and companionship, and your Collie will give it back in abundance to all members of their pack, including children. In fact, due to their background as herding dogs, these canines have even been known to try and herd children and other pets!

Rough Collies can do well both in the country and the city. But remember that they need constant companionship and regular daily exercise to remain happy and healthy. These dogs should ideally have at least an hour of exercise every day.

10 reasons to add a Collie (Rough) to your family

The Collie Rough's loyalty knows no bounds, and they will love and protect anyone who shows them kindness. They are equally great with adults, children, and other animals.

This breed is a natural protector who will do whatever it can to keep their cherished ones safe and free from harm.

Do you dislike loud environments and big crowds? So does a Collie Rough! They are sensitive dogs, and loud voices and tense energy make them uncomfortable.

Never will you think this dog breed is stupid. Along with immediately picking up new tricks and commands, they may even learn your emotions and how best to respond based on your mood!

Collie Roughs are pretty energetic, so if you tend to be a couch potato, you won't be anymore!

With such a luscious coat, you may assume these pups are high maintenance in the grooming department. However, weekly brushing is generally sufficient to keep their fur in top condition.

Because of their ability to observe and respond to human needs, they will always be there offering you a helping hand when you feel sad or depressed.

Did you know it was Queen Victoria who was the first to see the Rough Collie's potential as more than just a sheep herder? After seeing them at Balmoral Castle, she acquired one, which led to their popularity rising.

Aside from Queen Victoria, their appearance in the popular 60's TV show, Lassie, made this breed a firm favourite.

Finally, their regal faces, muscular bodies, and long coats make them one of the most beautiful dog breeds.

Meet the Collie Rough

This regal-looking canine is medium to large, standing between 51 and 61 cm tall. Like most dog breeds, females are noticeably smaller and lighter. A female Rough Collie will weigh between 50-65 lbs, but males can weigh up to 70 lbs.

The Collie Rough has a solid body structure. They boast firm backs, deep chests, broad shoulders, and powerful necks. Their back and front legs are strong, with athletic thighs displaying their muscles. In addition, they have oval-shaped feet and long, fluffy tails.

Collie Roughs have wedge-shaped heads with finely chiselled faces. They have small to medium eyes, which are usually dark-coloured. Their ears are also relatively small, which point backwards when relaxed and forwards when alert or excited.

The Collie Rough's long double coat features a very thick, straight top coat with a coarse texture. The undercoat is much softer, and they have significant feathering around their legs and necks, the latter creating the appearance of a mane. Their tails are also bushy, creating an overall fluffy look.

There are just a few colourings that a Collie Rough can have. The most common are Sable (which can range from light gold to dark tan) and white, or tricolour, consisting of black, tan, and white. The Blue merle colouring is also possible, which comprises a silvery-blue coat splashed with black patches.

The temperament of a Collie Rough

As herding dogs, Collie Roughs are responsive, fast, and loyal to their owners. However, their affectionate nature and brilliant minds are what make dog enthusiasts fall in love with them.

Many Collie owners believe these canines are smart enough to understand their emotions and alter their behaviour based on this. Some also say that these dogs can anticipate their needs, likely due to their working background.

However, because of their intelligence, Collie Roughs need a lot of mental stimulation and training. Without enough, they can show signs of unhappiness and may act up. However, they will thrive if you engage them in regular obedience and agility circuits.

Collie Roughs develop a close, strong bond with their owners, who they like to cuddle up with when they tire out. However, they don't appreciate being left alone for too long, and thus, are happiest with someone who is home often or can take them everywhere they go.

One of the best traits of this breed is their desire to be involved in all family activities. They will follow you around the house and try to help you with your chore. They also love to play and will initiate games with you when they are in a playful mood.

Best homes for a Collie Rough

The home environment is less important for a Collie Rough. Instead, the type of person they become a companion of matters the most. Their ideal owner is someone who is home often and has plenty of time to play with them and keep them occupied and exercised.

They may be unable to find contentment in a home with people who are always away or too busy to give them the attention they need and crave.

They can live happily in an apartment if they get enough attention and exercise. However, their dream home would be a countryside house with a large garden where they can run around and let off steam whenever they like.

Collie Roughs are great for children and other animals. They have a gentle disposition and will genuinely care for and look out for the children or other pets they grow up with.

FAQs about the Collie (Rough)

At The Pedigree Paws, we partner with 100% certified and reputable Collie Rough breeders. They have years of experience with this dog breed and are incredibly passionate about their work.

To ensure this, we have established a series of checks and requirements. For example, we only accept breeders that raise their puppies in an ethical home environment with clean, comfortable conditions. Here are the Pedigree Paws; we are firmly against puppies being bred in puppy mills or pet farms and do not associate with any commercial breeding facility.

If you're looking for a loving, loyal, and highly intelligent canine with a stunning appearance, you'll absolutely adore the Collie Rough. These pups develop strong relationships with their owners and are natural protectors, always wanting to be by your side.

However, consider that Collie Roughs can suffer separation anxiety if left alone for too long. Thus, there may be a better dog breed for you if you're away from home often.

Here at The Pedigree Paws, we are all passionate and loving pet owners; thus, it's safe to say we would never support unethical breeding. In fact, this is the very reason why we created this platform.

We were sick of seeing scams and corrupt operations in the dog pedigree world. We wanted to create a place where puppy lovers can come to confidently choose a new furry companion.

We're not just words, though; we also walk our talk. We've established a strict and comprehensive application process involving numerous checks that all breeders must complete before being accepted onto our books.

While the Collie Rough is a reasonably hardy dog, like all pedigree breeds, there are certain illnesses they are prone to. Regardless, we do everything we can to minimise the risk of your new Collie Rough getting sick.

For instance, all our breeders must run DNA health tests on their breeding dogs and their litters to ensure there are no genetic diseases in the bloodline. We only allow the sale of a puppy after seeing a clear health check.

Our breeders will also prepare your Collie Rough for the healthiest start by vaccinating, microchipping, and taking them for a complete health checkup with a vet.

Our standard procedure is that all puppies must stay with their mum for a minimum of eight weeks before going to their forever home. This period is vital for ensuring they grow and develop as they should. Staying with their mum for eight weeks also minimises the risk of them developing illnesses as they get sufficient milk from their mother, which is full of essential nutrients.

However, as we believe every puppy should wean when it is ready, this does mean some require a bit longer with their mothers. Each puppy's development is unique, but typically all puppies are ready by 12 weeks of age. The breeder will confirm the exact date with you as soon as possible.

Yes, sure! We know you may have concerns about your new puppy's health or temperament and want to put your mind at ease before handing over money.

We allow you to arrange a video call with the breeder. This way, you can virtually meet the Collie Rough you're interested in and its parents and observe their health and temperament before making any decision.

All respectable breeders provide proof of their puppies' pedigree registration, which is one requirement that all our breeders meet. You will receive official documentation detailing your puppy's breed, so you'll have no concerns over its authenticity. The documents will be original copies from one of the leading pedigree organisations, such as The Kennel Club.

Not good, but the best! I know what you're thinking; that's a bold statement. But we are confident in the quality of our breeders as we have an extensive and comprehensive application procedure. This sifts out any breeder that doesn't meet our extremely high standards.

In addition to our in-house application process, all our Collie rough breeders meet the conditions of the top international pedigree associations.

Every puppy from The Pedigree Paws is raised in the breeder's own home, where it stays with its mother until it is ready to naturally wean and become independent. We don't work with any commercial breeding facilities as they remove the puppies from the mother too early, which leads to severe stress and various health and behaviour issues.

Aside from being with their mother in a safe and clean family home environment, your new puppy will also be around people from birth. Thus, they will already have a good association with humans, making your job of training and socialisation easier.

As each puppy's personality is different, how long it takes for them to settle varies. However, you can do a few things to promote a stress-free experience and help your new Collie Rough quickly feel at home.

One thing that helps a lot is to put a comfy bed in a dark, quiet environment. If your new pup is stressed or scared, immediately introducing them to the whole family will overwhelm them further. So instead, take them to this quiet space and give them a few hours to decompress in peace.

Moreover, when you show your new Collie Rough around, keep them on their leash initially so they understand you are the leader and they must listen to you.
