Breed traits and characteristics

Smooth Collies are handsome canines that were initially bred to work as herding dogs. Although they are still used as working dogs today, Smooth Collies have also gained a reputation for being devoted and protective family dogs. These dogs are very similar in appearance to the Rough Collie. The only main difference is the length of their coats. In fact, many breed organisations class both the Smooth and Rough Collies as one breed. However, they are classed as separate breeds by the UK Kennel Club.

Smooth Collies, like all Collies, are known for their high intelligence and gentle disposition. These dogs thrive on companionship and are known to adore children. However, unfortunately, they have fallen out of favour in recent years and are now much less popular than their rough-coated counterparts. These dogs are listed as a Vulnerable Native Breed by the Kennel Club which means that less than 300 puppies are bred every year.

Smooth Collies are sweet-tempered, incredibly loving, and playful dogs that can quickly become integral members of the family. Their short, close-lying coats also make them very easy to maintain on the grooming front, compared to their longer-haired cousins.

No puppy mill pledge

10 reasons to add a Collie (Smooth) to your family

Collie Smooths naturally want to protect who they love, so you can count on this canine to always watch out for you.

Their gentle disposition and ability to form close bonds mean your kids will instantly gain a new best friend.

Being herding dogs, Collie Smooths love to run and play outside. So bringing this breed into your family can help you reconnect with nature and get fit.

Not all pets can understand human emotions and tailor their behaviour to how they anticipate you are feeling. You'll be simply amazed when you first notice your Collie Smooth doing this!

Collie Smooths are not aggressive dogs. They may act protective of you and bark at strangers, but they won't attack.

Their short coats take care of themselves, so grooming will not take up much of your time. A weekly brush is enough for these dogs.

Thanks to their high intelligence, teaching this dog what's right from wrong is a pretty easy task.

Whether you're looking for a show dog or want a furry friend to teach impressive tricks, you'll have bundles of fun with a Collie Smooth.

Queen Victoria was well known for her love of dogs. Although she appreciated all types of canines, Collie Smooths were one of her favourite breeds, which she fell in love with after coming across them at Balmoral Castle.

As a breed born and bred in the UK, these canines are commonly available.

Meet the Collie Smooth

This family-loving canine is medium to large, weighing 50 to 70 lbs and standing between 51 and 61 cm tall. Like most breeds, females are typically smaller and lighter than males.

The Collie Smooth has a robust and powerful body, revealing its working background and ability to run fast. Their backs are firm and muscular, encasing deep chests and broad shoulders. Their legs are strong and athletic, showcasing the muscles that make them terrific runners.

Collie Smooth dogs have wedge-shaped heads with finely chiselled facial features, sitting atop a powerful neck. Both their eyes and ears are relatively small.

The Collie Small has a single coat that is short in length and easy to maintain. They essentially have the Collie Rough's soft undercoat without the long, rough top coat. This gives them a constant appearance of having a neat haircut.

Collie Smooth dogs come in the same colours as Collie Roughs; brown, tan, white, black, and merle (a silvery-blue coat). They typically have dark eyes unless they have the merle coat, in which case they may have one or two blue eyes.

The temperament of a Collie Smooth

Collie Smooths are impressively responsive to their owner's needs and commands due to their background as herding dogs. Moreover, because they are used to being around humans, they have evolved to develop deep and meaningful relationships with those they live with.

Thus, Collie Smooths have a super affectionate nature and unwavering loyalty. They are naturally protective of their humans and clever enough to understand their owner's emotions and anticipate their needs.

This dog's intelligence is one of the most fantastic things about the Collie Smooth. However, having an ultra-smart dog does come with responsibility. Collie Smooths require lots of mental stimulation through training, play, and exercise. Obedience training and agility circuits work wonders for this breed but will require significant time from you.

While pretty active, Collie Smooths can be super cute and have moments when they cuddle up with you on the couch or sleep by your feet. They develop extremely close bonds with their owners and don't like being apart. Unfortunately, this means they struggle when left alone, and separation anxiety is common.

The good side of the close relationship they build with you is that they make fabulous company. They love to stay by their owner's side, assist them with anything they need help with and join in the family activities. Thus, they can quickly become the centre of the family!

Best homes for a Collie Smooth

The most crucial factor to consider with this breed is its social needs. Collie Smooths need a human companion who stays home lots, as they do not do well alone. However, it's not enough to just be around a Collie Smooth; you'll need the time and energy to interact regularly and tire out their intelligent brains.

As long as their needs are met, a Collie Smooth can adjust to any physical environment, such as a home to a flat. That being said, they enjoy being outdoors, so a house with a garden is always ideal.

Collie Smooths make excellent companions for large families, including those with children and other pets. This breed is gentle and loving to all and can become great friends with other animals and kids. Because they have a naturally caring and protective nature, you'll likely notice how they watch out for the children and animals they grow up with.

FAQs about the Collie (Smooth)

At The Pedigree Paws, we partner with fully certified and highly trusted Collie Smooth breeders. They have years of experience and a strong passion for this beautiful breed. In addition, all our breeders raise their puppies in their own homes, where they stay with the mother dog and litter mates.

We have put in place various strict checks and requirements to ensure we only work with the most ethical breeders. We are strongly committed to ensuring all puppies are raised in safe, clean, comfortable conditions and receive all the care they need. We are rigidly against puppy mills and pet farms where dogs are raised in unethical conditions, causing much stress to the puppies and breeding dogs.

If you're looking for a loving, loyal, and highly intelligent dog to become the centre of your family, yes! Collie Smooths adore human attention and build strong bonds with their owners. They will protect you and stay by your side, keeping you company always.

Even so, remember that Collie smooths can suffer separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Therefore, they are only suited to people who stay at home often, such as retirees, those working from home, or large families where there is always someone around.

As passionate and loving pet owners ourselves, it's safe to say we would never think of supporting unethical breeding of any kind.

We created this platform to stand up against rogue, dishonourable commercial breeding facilities. Thus, we felt called to make an online place where puppy lovers can find new furry friends without worrying if the puppies come from a good place.

To show our commitment to improving the conditions of dog breeding, we have a strict, comprehensive application process that every breeder goes through. In addition, we run a series of checks to ensure every breeder is of top quality.

As a long, established breed, Collie Smooths are generally healthy. Even so, there are certain illnesses they are prone to, so it's essential to be careful when buying a puppy.

To help ease your mind, we do everything we can to minimise the risk of your new Collie Smooth carrying a genetic disease. This includes requiring all breeders to run extensive DNA health tests on their breeding dogs and their subsequent litters. These tests check for any genetic disorders in the bloodline, so we only allow the sale of dogs with clean results.

In addition, your Collie Smooth breeder will prepare your new furry friend for a healthy life by taking them for a complete health checkup with a vet, involving vaccination and microchipping.

Here at The Pedigree Paws, we have a standard procedure: puppies must stay with the mother dog for no less than eight weeks before going to their new home. This period is vital for their growth and development as it minimises their risk of getting sick.

However, know that your puppy may need a little longer than eight weeks. This is because puppies should wean when only they are ready, and this is different for each individual canine. The breeder will confirm the exact date with you as soon as they can.

Yes, of course! We are committed to making our customers feel as at ease as possible. One way we do this is to arrange a video call between you and the breeder.

While in an ideal world, you would meet the puppy in person before buying, this is only possible if the breeder is located close to you. However, you can virtually meet your potential new Collie Smooth and its parents on a video call. You can observe their health and get a feel for their temperament, helping you make a confident decision.

Every respectable and ethical breeder will provide proof of their puppies' pedigree registration when sending them to their new owner. This is one of the many requirements we have at The Pedigree Paws, so you can rest assured you'll get official proof of your puppy's pedigree. In addition, it will be the original copy from one of the leading pedigree organisations.

Actually, they come from the best breeders in the UK, which is a bold statement, I know! But we are confident in the quality of our breeders as we have an exhaustive application procedure that filters out any breeder not up to our high standards.

In addition to our comprehensive application process, all our Collie Smooth breeders meet the rules and conditions of the top international pedigree alliances like The Kennel Club.

Yes, all The Pedigree Paws puppies are raised in the breeder's home, where they receive abundant love, care, and milk from their mother. Here they wean and become independent at their own rate, which is never rushed.

We don't (and will never) work with commercial breeding facilities like puppy mills. One of the many unethical operations of these "facilities" is that they remove puppies from their mother too early, almost always leading to severe stress and health problems.

Another benefit of puppies being raised in a family home is that they are around people from birth. So, by the time they come to you, they already have a good association with humans, making training and socialisation easier.

As each puppy's personality differs, it's impossible to know how quickly your new furry friend will settle into its new home. Still, there are a few things we recommend doing to promote a stress-free transition.

One thing that helps immensely is having a dark and quiet place for your pup to decompress when they arrive. Thus, we suggest setting up a quiet room with a comfy bed and confining them here for the first few hours. In addition, when you show your new Collie Smooth pup around its new home, keep them on the leash to establish leadership roles immediately.
