Cotons, as they are affectionately known, are adaptable, loving dogs that generally get along well with everyone – including children and other dogs.

They can be happy living in an apartment in the city and larger homes in the countryside. Just make sure not to leave them alone for long periods of time because it won’t be appreciated!

The sweet-natured Coton de Tulear thrives in human company. So, expect these affectionate dogs to follow you from room to room, lie at your feet, or join you on a ride to your favourite coffee shop. The Coton de Tulear is at its happiest when by your side.

The Coton de Tulear was never bred to be anything other than a devoted canine companion. So, they tend to be very in tune with their masters, listening intently to your words and always eager to please. 10 reasons to add a Coton de Tulear to your family

From their looks to their personality, this dog is a cuteness overload. You'll want to pick them up and cuddle them all the time; luckily, they love this as much as you do!

No matter how small your home is, this pup will only take up a little space. Moreover, they don't need frequent access to the outdoors, so they are content with apartment life.

This canine is always up for learning something new and picks things up quickly. Teach them to fetch, dance, twirl, or anything else.

Although they don't like being left alone, they love travelling and having new adventures. So if you're someone who takes regular weekend getaways or camping trips, you're new Coton will make the best travel buddy.

If you're a fan of white dogs and soft, long coats, the Coton de Tulear is your dream dog.

Their floppy ears, button nose, and round black eyes will melt your heart every time!

Weighing no more than 6kg, this dog is easy to pick up and carry for most people. So even if you live in a flat with no lift, it's still possible to have this breed.

These pups have a long lifespan and are not predisposed to severe illnesses. Their most common health issues are things that can be easily treated/controlled, like skin allergies and bacterial infections.

Like cats, this dog breed will "speak" to you to express its needs and wants. They don't have a traditional bark but a diverse range of unique vocalisations.

When this breed was first discovered, many members of Malagasy royalty fell in love with them and wanted them all to themselves. Thus, they became the only people allowed to keep this breed, making them highly desirable to everyone else.

Meet the Coton de Tulear

The story goes that this lovely white dog breed originated from a group of small canines that swam across the Malagasy channel following a shipwreck in the region. They travelled to America and Europe in the 1970s and were particularly popular in France before making their way to the UK.

The small dog breed typically weighs between 3.6 to 6 kg, similar in size to a cat. Cotons are often compared to the Bichon Frise as they share the same lush, fluffy coats, pure white in colour. This fur is wavy and feels soft to the touch, making them look like a giant cotton ball.

White is the only colour these pups come in. However, they can have light grey, apricot, or fawn shadings, which is most apparent in their coats when they are young.

They have a pretty compact body shape with tucked-up bellies, muscular back legs, and small, round paws with black pads. Their neck is relatively long, with a strong jaw sitting atop.

The Coton de Tulear's eyes are heart-melting - round, dark, and highly expressive. Their ears are slender and droopy, set high on their head, and they have adorable black button noses.

The temperament of a Coton de Tulear

The Coton de Tulear may be a small dog, but they have a massive personality with many desirable traits. They are loving, loyal, playful, interactive, and intelligent, everything you want in a canine.

They are active and always up to play, especially if it's an interactive game with their human. They are always on the go and follow their owners around, wanting to be involved in everything they do. They are extremely people-oriented and thrive when they have frequent human interaction. This does mean that they don't do well on their own, though, which is something any prospective Coton owner should bear in mind.

These intelligent pups are a joy to train and are always eager to learn new tricks and commands. They associate training with spending time with their owners and learning new things with pleasing their favourite humans. Thus, if you are interested in dog training, you'll have tons of fun with this breed.

The Coton de Tulear also has a very happy-go-lucky nature, and their antics will undoubtedly make you giggle. The breed is generally friendly, assuming they are well-socialised. If a Coton doesn't recieve early socialisation, they can be reserved and cautious around strangers as they grow up.

As small dogs, they make unique, softer-sounding vocalisations than the traditional bark. They can also often sound like they are chatting to you.

Best homes for a Coton de Tulear

Their small size and easy-going nature mean these dogs fit well into any living environment. They can be content in a flat or apartment if they get daily outdoor time and plenty of interactive play.

However, the one thing the Coton needs is an owner who is home often. They hate being left alone, so their ideal owner would be a stay-at-home worker/parent or retiree.

With early socialisation, this breed typically gets on great with children and can grow up to be best friends. Because they are the size of a cat, there's no worry that they will accidentally squash a small child. Still, like with all breeds, you should always supervise them when around children.

Likewise, provided they are socialised early, Coton puppies generally live well with other dogs or cats.

FAQs about the Coton de Tulear

We've joined forces with the best Coton de Tulear breeders in the UK and Europe, all of which are fully certified, registered and highly trusted. They have many years of experience and a strong passion for this adorable fluffy breed. In addition, we're proud to say that all our breeders raise their Coton puppies in their own homes, together with the mother dog and litter mates.

You may wonder how we know our breeders can be trusted. Well, we have many strict checks to ensure we only work with the most ethical breeders, and they must meet our high standards and requirements.

We strive for all Pedigree Paws puppies to be raised in the safest, cleanest, most comfortable conditions possible. To ensure this, they can only be cared for in a family home where they receive all the necessary care.

If you're looking for a small, loving, loyal, playful, intelligent pup with the most adorable appearance, then yes! This breed does fab in all sorts of homes and gets on well with children and other pets (providing they are socialised early).

However, the Coton de Tulear hates being left alone and will suffer separation anxiety if their owner is away too much. Therefore, they are best suited to people who stay at home, like parents, retirees, or remote workers.

As passionate and loving pet owners, we would never think of supporting any type of unethical breeding. This is why we do not ever work with any commercial breeding facility. Instead, we only associate with private breeders who breed their personal dogs and raise their litters in their homes.

What's more, as we're committed to improving the conditions of dog breeding, we have a strict, comprehensive application procedure each of our breeders must go through. We also conduct a series of checks before accepting a new breeder onto our site.

The Coton de Tulear is a generally healthy breed with a long lifespan and no predisposition to major diseases.

Even so, we're committed to ensuring all our puppies are in top health. Thus, we have a procedure where all breeders must run DNA health tests on their breeding dogs and the subsequent litters. These tests are vital as they check for any genetic disorders in the bloodline.

Our breeders will also prepare your new white fluffy friend for the next stage of their life by taking them to a vet for a check-up, vaccination, and microchipping.

We follow a strict standard procedure that all puppies must stay with their mother for no less than eight weeks. So they cannot come to you before this time, as it's a crucial period for their growth and development.

Also, note that some puppies need longer with their mother until they are ready to wean and become independent. So, your Coton puppy may need a little longer than eight weeks. Regardless, the breeder will tell you the exact date your pup is ready as soon as possible.

Yes, of course! We want you to feel as comfortable and confident as possible in the buying process. We know this is challenging if you can't meet your new pup in person before buying.

Therefore, we've devised an alternative - a video call with the breeder where you virtually meet your potential new Coton and its parents. This way, you can observe their health and temperament before making your final decision or handing over any money.

All our breeders provide proof of their puppies' pedigree registration. They will include the original documentation when sending your new Coton pup. In addition, the registration will be with one of the leading pedigree organisations, like The Kennel Club.

Actually, they come from the very best breeders! That's a bold statement, I know! But we are highly confident in the quality of our breeders because we have a thorough application procedure that leaves only the very best.

Along with our comprehensive in-house application process, all our Coton breeders meet the rules and conditions of the top international pedigree organisations, such as The Kennel Club.

Yes, our puppies are only raised in the breeder's home. Here they receive all the love, care, and milk from their mother to grow into excellent fluffy companions. We are also committed to puppy-led weaning, allowing them to become independent in their own time.

We don't (and will never) work with any sort of commercial breeding facility. This includes puppy mills, pet farms, and other large-scale breeding programs. In these facilities, the puppies are forced to wean before they are ready and removed from their mother too early, causing the mother and babies severe stress and often health problems.

Every puppy's personality differs, so some settle into their new home instantly, while others require some time. Although you can't predict how quickly they will acclimatise, you can do a few things to create a stress-free transition.

When your new pup arrives, we recommend first keeping them in one room with the door closed. Try to interact with them but also have a dark, quiet corner where they can retreat to if they feel overwhelmed.

Moreover, when your new Coton pup appears settled enough to explore the rest of the house, keep them on the leash to establish leadership roles immediately when you show them around.
