Breed traits and characteristics

English Springer Spaniels were bred and developed as gun dogs to flush out game birds. They are named after the way they "spring" at their prey, forcing them to fly up so hunters can shoot them. These dogs have long been favoured companions of sportsmen. However, the lively Springer Spaniel also makes an excellent family companion as long as they receive all the training and exercise they need.

English Springer Spaniels are intelligent and always eager to please. They are cheerful, playful dogs that form strong bonds with their human companions. English Springer Spaniels typically do well with kids if they are brought up with them from a young age. They are also usually good around other pets in the home. However, they might see pet birds as potential prey because of their hunting background.

English Springer Spaniels need a lot of exercise to remain happy, otherwise, they can suffer from boredom and become destructive. You will also need to make sure you keep them on a leash in unfenced areas because they have a tendency to dash off if they pick up an appealing scent.

In addition, English Springer Spaniels make skilled athletes. Several non-hunting dog owners partake in canine activities such as agility, obedience, tracking, and flyball with their English Springer Spaniels. They also make great companions when you go hiking or camping and can be trained as effective, loving therapy dogs, bringing smiles to people in hospitals and nursing homes.

10 reasons to add a English Springer Spaniel to your family

Nothing makes a Springer Spaniel happier than knowing they have made their human happy!

These brilliant pups learn tricks and commands quickly and are pros at agility courses.

If you’ve been wanting to get more active, an English Springer Spaniel will happily take on the role of your personal trainer. This dog loves running or walking with their human, and they are excellent company while working out.

It’s not only exercise they are interested in. Springer Spaniels adore all types of activity, especially if it involves the outdoors, such as camping, picnics in the parks, or road trips.

These pups date back to at least the 16th century, when they are believed to appear in various paintings.

The Springer Spaniel’s intelligence and eagerness to please make them rank high in the show rings. For example, they have won the third most awards at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

This breed has been owned by the likes of George W. Bush, Oprah Winfrey, and actress Tilda Swinton.

Not many people know about the English Springer Spaniel’s love of water. They adore splashing around and swimming in rivers, lakes, and even pools. So if you surprise them with a paddling pool in the summer, they will be overjoyed!

If you live alone or work from home, this canine will keep you accompanied and entertained all day.

Of course, there is no hiding the fact that these dogs have highly adorable looks. Their floppy ears and expressive eyes are to die for!

Meet the English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized canine standing 19 to 20 inches tall and weighing between 40 and 50 pounds. They have athletic bodies with medium-length fur, which is either flat or wavy.

Most English Springer Spaniels have a black and white or liver and white coat. However, tri-colored coats and other pattern variations like ticking are also possible. They have plenty of feathering on their floppy ears, strong chest, and muscular legs, giving them an appearance that is perfectly balanced between rugged and elegant.

The English Springer Spaniel’s face is very distinct to their breed. It consists of long hanging ears covered with feathering and expressive almond-shaped eyes sitting below a broad skull.

Because English Springer Spaniels are now such popular companion dogs, their appearance has slightly changed from what it used to be when they were predominantly field dogs. Many companion-bred Springer Spaniels have squarer muzzles, longer hair, and longer ears than those bred to work in the fields.

The temperament of an English Springer Spaniel

As English Springer Spaniels come from a working background, this breed is intelligent, quick to learn, and eager to please. They love to learn new things and assist their owners in whatever way possible, so they thrive with an owner who enjoys interacting with them through training, exercise, and play.

English Springer Spaniels have both a desire and a need to be close to their humans often. Thus, they don’t do well when left alone for too long. With no one to “help,” they get bored quickly and may resort to destructive behaviour such as chewing furniture or clothes.

These canines are naturally active and playful and need more exercise and stimulation than a simple daily walk. They enjoy outdoor life and thrive when they have access to an enclosed garden. However, because of their closeness to their humans, this is not a dog you can leave out in the yard all day.

English Springer Spaniels are slow to mature, so they maintain their playful and curious nature for at least the first few years of their lives. Springer Spaniels also adapt to new environments well, making them fantastic travel, hiking, or camping companions, loving all the additional exercise and activity it brings them.

English Springer Spaniels tend to bark at loud or unfamiliar noises or when a stranger is at the door. However, they settle quickly, especially if you pet them.

Best homes for an English Springer Spaniel

As they are highly active dogs, English Springer Spaniels need a human companion with ample time to play, exercise, and train with them. They are not lap dogs and cannot purely entertain themselves, so ensure you will have enough time to meet this pup’s needs.

English Springer Spaniels generally do well around children, provided they have been socialised with them from an early age. Again, providing they receive early socialisation, Cocker Spaniels typically live happily and peacefully with cats and other dogs.

However, because of their high prey drive, this dog is not a good fit if you have smaller animals in the home, like rabbits, hamsters, or birds.

FAQs about the English Springer Spaniel

We collaborate with only the very best English Springer Spaniel breeders in the UK. All our breeders work privately, are fully certified and have many years of experience with this breed.

At The Pedigree Paws, we ensure all our puppies are raised in the safest and most comfortable living conditions. Therefore, we only work with breeders who raise their English Springer Spaniel puppies in their own homes, where they stay with the mother dog and the rest of the litter.

We have total confidence that our breeders are trustworthy and ethical as they passed rigorous checks to work with us.

English Springer Spaniels make excellent companions for most home environments as they love being around humans. However, they have a high need for exercise and attention, so they need to be with someone who has plenty of time for them. This is not the best canine for you if you lead a hectic life and are rarely home.

These pups generally do great with other dogs and cats but should not be in a home with small animals like rabbits and birds. They also do best where they have frequent outdoor access, like an enclosed garden.

The humans behind The Pedigree Paws are all passionate animal lovers with their own pet companions. We share the same desire as you; for all puppies to be bred in safe and ethical conditions. Thus, you can rest assured that we will never support commercial breeding facilities. Instead, we only work with private breeders who meet our high standards and go through rigorous checks.

All our Springer Spaniel breeders look after their puppies and dogs in their own homes with their families. The puppies stay here with the mother dog for as long as needed, weaning naturally and unforcedly.

To demonstrate our commitment to improving the conditions of UK dog breeding, we have created a comprehensive onboarding procedure that our breeders must pass. In addition, we conduct various checks on each breeder before accepting them onto The Pedigree Paws platform.

English Springer Spaniels are generally healthy, but like most breeds, they have predispositions to some diseases. This breed is particularly prone to joint problems like Hip Dysplasia. Other genetic disorders include Heart Disease and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).

Because of these health concerns, we do everything we can to ensure all our Springer Spaniel puppies are in top health. We do this by ensuring all puppies on our website have had a DNA health test. Our breeders organise this and provide the results to you and us. These tests pick up any genetic disorders that the puppy has in the bloodline.

The breeder will also take your new Springer Spaniel to a licensed veterinarian for a check-up, vaccination, and microchipping procedure. You will receive the vaccine booklet and microchip certificate with your new puppy.

Like all other breeds, we have a strict procedure that all English Springer Spaniels must stay with the mother dog until they reach eight weeks old at a minimum. This period is crucial for their health and development.

However, it doesn't necessarily mean your new puppy will come to you as soon as they reach eight weeks old. Puppy development is individual, and we believe every pup should wean naturally and only leave its mother when it is independent enough and psychologically ready.

Your breeder will let you know when you can expect to meet your new fluffy friend.

Yes, sure! We strive to make the puppy-buying process as comfortable and secure as possible. We also know how important it is to ensure your new puppy has a good temperament and looks healthy before handing over any money.

As most breeders will live too far away for a quick home visit, we offer the opportunity to have a video call with them instead. This way, you can see the puppy and its parents and make a more informed, confident decision.

All the Pedigree Paws breeders register their English Springer Spaniel puppies with one of the top pedigree organisations, such as The Kennel Club. The breeder will send the original certification and documents with your new pup, so you'll have proof of your Springer Spaniel's heritage.

We can say with complete assurance that our English Springer Spaniel puppies come from the best breeders in the UK. How do we know this? Because we have a thorough application procedure in place, and each of our breeders has undergone and passed it.

In addition, all our Springer Spaniel breeders are registered with The Kennel Club or another international pedigree organisation and meet the rules and conditions they set.

Every puppy you see on The Pedigree Paws is raised in the breeder's home. Here they stay with the mother dog and the rest of the litter in a clean, cosy, family environment. Each pup receives immense love and care in this comfortable setting, helping them grow into an even-tempered and affectionate companion dog.

We are fully against any kind of commercial dog breeding, so you'll never have to worry about supporting a puppy mill when choosing a pet from us.

While English Springer Spaniels adore being around humans, it may take your pup a little time to settle into their new home and get used to you. Here are a few things we suggest you do to promote a stress-free experience for your new fluffy friend.

When your Springer Spaniel pup arrives, keep them in one room with the door closed for the first couple of hours. They may be a little stressed from the journey, so this will allow them to decompress.

Once your new furry friend seems settled and eager to explore, keep them leashed as you show them around the rest of the home. Keeping them on the leash will help to establish leadership roles from the get-go.
