Breed traits and characteristics

German Shepherds are one of America’s most popular and endeared dog breeds, and for good reason! These brilliant and talented working dogs have dedication and courage that are unrivalled. German Shepherds are also amazingly adaptable and versatile.

Bred to be working dogs, this breed excels at whatever it’s trained to do. As a result, they are regularly used in police and military services, search and rescue, drug detection, assistance work for the handicapped, herding, and competitive obedience. German Shepherds are even considered to be national heroes in the US after they were part of the search and rescue team that crawled through the ruins of the World Trade Center after the September 11th terrorist attacks. They also make devoted canine companions.

German Shepherds are sometimes referred to as Alsatians in Great Britain and other parts of Europe. They are amongst the top 10 most popular and most recognised dog breeds around the world. These dogs represent nearly all of the best canine traits. However, they are not for everyone. This dog breed was originally bred to herd flocks, so they have high energy levels. You must ensure you have the time to devote to their unique mental and physical needs. Otherwise, they can become destructive through frustration and boredom.

This dog breed can be aloof and standoffish with strangers because they are very territorial and fiercely loyal to their family members. This makes them great watchdogs. However, if you familiarize a German Shepherd with various situations and people from an early age, they can learn to adapt to new people and situations.

Meet the German Shepherd

The German Shepherd originated from a family of German herding dogs sometime in the late 19th century. They have large, strong, well-proportioned bodies with long muscular necks, drawn-up abdomens, and level backs with a natural downward curve.

Like many dog breeds, male German Shepherds are slightly bigger than females. Males stand between 24 and 26 inches, while females are 22 to 24 inches tall. They typically weigh anywhere between 75 to 95 pounds, so they are pretty hefty canines.

The German Shepherd’s head is broad, tapering evenly to a sharp muzzle. Their almond-shaped eyes are expressive and usually dark brown in colour. They have moderately large ears set wide at the base of their head, standing erect to give them their distinct appearance.

German Shepherds can have medium or long hair coats. Medium-haired German Shepherds have a close-lying double coat that feels coarse. In contrast, long-haired pups have a thick undercoat and a softer top coat that sits further away from the body. Regardless of the hair length, all German Shepherds are known to have long feathering around their hindlimbs.

Most German Shepherds will have the distinct black and tan coat colouring. However, they can also come in solid black or grey; the latter will have a fawn-coloured undercoat to create lighter markings.

The temperament of a German Shepherd

German Shepherds were initially used as herding dogs on farms. Still, it wasn’t long before their incredible strength and intelligence became apparent, and they began working in different fields.

Today, they are the preferred dog for police and military units as they are intelligent, obedient, and highly active. Their typical nature is easy-going, laidback, friendly, and approachable. Still, they are highly protective of their humans, making them such great guard dogs too.

Although their large size can look intimidating, they are not typically aggressive unless they or their owner is threatened. Luckily though, because of their intelligent minds, they can accurately tell if a threat is real, so they won’t try to attack the postman!

Because they are naturally cautious, this is not a dog that will instantly become best friends with everyone it meets. They take time to accept new people, but they will be loyal buddies for life once they do. Because of their nature, ensuring they are well-socialised with various people from an early age is essential.

As working dogs, German Shepherds are happiest when they have a job. Thus, they need regular physical and mental stimulation to keep them happy. If these needs are unmet or they are left alone for too long, they can become destructive or resort to excessive barking.

Because of their intelligent minds, these canines learn very quickly. So if you’re a first-time dog owner, you’ll need to study dog training or take them to a professional dog trainer. They ace agility courses, dog sports, and obedience training sessions.

Best homes for a German Shepherd

German Shepherds require lots of physical and mental stimulation. Moreover, they don't do well left alone for too long as they get bored quickly. Thus, these pups do best with an owner who has plenty of time, preferably one who will take them out with them as much as possible.

The German Shepherd's high energy levels make them an excellent fit for active people. So if you enjoy running, hiking or outdoor adventures like camping, this canine could be your perfect companion.

German Shepherds can do great in homes with children, provided they are socialised with them from an early age. When these pups grow up with kids, a beautiful relationship blossoms as they will look after and protect them for life.

Likewise, German Shepherds get on very well with other dogs and cats if they are socialised together while a puppy.

FAQs about the German Shepherd

We've handpicked the very best German Shepherd breeders in the UK to ensure you receive a healthy, even-tempered puppy raised in a 100% ethical and loving environment. Our German Shepherd breeders are fully certified, have many years of experience with this breed and raise their puppies in their own homes.

Moreover, we have rigorous checks that every breeder has to pass to work with us. Thus, we have total confidence that our breeders are ethical and trustworthy.

German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal, and active canines. They may be an excellent choice for you if you're looking for a protective yet loving guard dog, a best friend for your child, or an adventure buddy.

These dogs need lots of exercise and mental stimulation and get bored quickly. Thus, you should only consider this breed if you are home often, have plenty of free time, and have previous experience with dogs.

Did you know the humans behind The Pedigree Paws are passionate animal lovers, just like you? Therefore, we share the same desire as you do; to completely eradicate unethical dog breeding.

Because of this, you can rest assured that we don't (and never will) support commercial breeding facilities. Instead, we only work with private German Shepherd breeders who meet our high standards, raise their puppies in their own homes and have experience with the breed.

To demonstrate our pledge to improve the conditions of dog breeding in the UK, we've created a comprehensive onboarding process that each breeder must pass. In addition, we conduct various checks before accepting them onto The Pedigree Paws platform, such as ensuring the puppies stay with the mother dog and wean naturally.

German Shepherds are generally healthy dogs, but like most breeds, they have predispositions to some diseases. This breed is particularly prone to Hip Dysplasia, Degenerative Myelopathy, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.

Because of these health concerns, we do the utmost to guarantee all our German Shepherd puppies are in top health. One way is to ensure a DNA health test is run on each puppy and its parents. These tests pick up any genetic disorders that a puppy may have in the bloodline. Our breeders organise this and can provide the results to you for no charge.

The breeder will also take your new German Shepherd pup to a licensed veterinarian for a complete check-up, including vaccination and microchipping. They will send the vaccine booklet and microchip certificate with your new dog.

All our German Shepherd puppies must stay with their mother until they reach eight weeks old (at a minimum) and are fully weaned. This period is crucial for the puppy's health and initial development.

It's also important to note that some puppies need longer with their mothers than others. Thus, it doesn't necessarily mean your pup will come to you as soon as they reach eight weeks old. Instead, we ensure each puppy only leaves its mother when it is physically and psychologically ready.

If your puppy is currently younger than eight weeks, your breeder will let you know when you can expect to meet your new furry companion.

Yes, sure! Here at The Pedigree Paws, we make the puppy-buying process as comfortable, safe and enjoyable as possible. We know how important it is to ensure your new pup is healthy and even-tempered before handing over any money.

Unfortunately, most breeders live too far away for a quick home visit to meet the puppy before being. But don't despair, as we have come up with an alternative. You can arrange a video call with the breeder instead to virtually meet the puppy and its parents. This way, you can still make an informed, confident decision without meeting them in person.

All the Pedigree Paws German Shepherd breeders register their puppies with one of the top pedigree organisations, such as The Kennel Club, before sending them to their new families. The breeder will then send you the original certification and documents, so you have proof that your German Shepherd is purebred.

We have scoured all the German Shepherd breeders in the UK and Europe and selected only the best. I know what you're thinking; how do we know they are the best?

Well, all our breeders must pass the thorough application procedure and checks we have in place. They are also all registered with The Kennel Club or another international pedigree organisation, which requires them to meet additional rules and conditions.

Every German Shepherd puppy on The Pedigree Paws is raised in the breeder's home with the mother dog and the rest of the litter. As a result, each pup receives ample love, care and socialisation, helping them grow into an even-tempered companion dog.

Note that we are entirely against any kind of commercial dog breeding. So you'll never have to worry about supporting a puppy mill or pet farm when choosing a German Shepherd from us.

While most puppies are typically highly adaptable, German Shepherds are known to be a little apprehensive when meeting new people. To help you create the most pleasant transitional period, here are a few things you can do.

When your new German Shepherd pup arrives, we recommend keeping them in one room with the door closed for the first couple of hours, especially if they seem scared. This will allow them to decompress and get their bearings without getting too overwhelmed or stressed.

Once your new pup seems settled and confident, you can introduce them to the rest of the house and family. However, keep them on their leash as you show them around; this will allow you to establish leadership roles immediately.
