Breed traits and characteristics

Greyhounds are considered to be one of the most ancient dog breeds in the world. They originated in Ancient Egypt and have been prized as devoted companions ever since. Cleopatra, General Custer, and Queen Elizabeth I of England are just some of the historical figures that were enchanted by Greyhounds. They are also dubbed the “Sport of Queens” because of the two queens' patronage.

Apart from their royal fans, there are many reasons why Greyhounds are loved around the world. They combine an elegant, majestic appearance with a welcoming attitude to people and other dogs. Faithful and loving with their family, they will let you know by barking or through a delicate pricking of their small, folded ears that someone is approaching your home.

Greyhounds have a status for having high energy levels. However, in reality, their favourite pastime is sleeping. This dog breed was designed to be a sprinter, not a long-distance runner. Greyhounds are generally satisfied with a daily walk as long as they get regular affection from their favourite people. These dogs can do well in apartments or homes with small yards. But make sure to put a solid fence around your garden to keep them from dashing after animals that they might see as prey, such as rabbits, squirrels, or trespassing neighbourhood cats.

Even with their strong prey drive, there is no doubt that this is an excellent dog breed that merits many belly rubs. Whether you acquired your Greyhound from a show breeder or adopted them from the racetrack, you will find yourself respecting this dog breed with the same appreciation that others have given it during its long and celebrated history.

Today, Greyhounds also partake in many other canine sports, such as lure conformation, coursing, agility, and obedience. Aside from their grace and speed, dog lovers adore them for their sweet, calm natures. Fans of the dog breed repeatedly claim that Greyhounds have two speeds: all-out sprint and total couch potato. But note that they are rather sensitive, both to extreme weather and loneliness. This is not a dog breed that can be left alone for long periods of time. Give them the love, attention, care, and exercise they desire, and you will have an affectionate, cuddle bug canine companion for life.

10 reasons to add a Greyhound to your family

These unique-looking dogs were depicted in early cave drawings and ancient Egyptian artefacts, making them one of the oldest dog breeds worldwide.

No other breed can top the Greyhound's impressive speed of 40 miles per hour!

Cleopatra and Queen Elizabeth I both fell in love with this dog breed, bringing them into their homes. Moreover, in Ancient Egypt and Greece, only Gods and people of royal blood were allowed to own them.

The Greyhound's history is so long and rich that they were actually mentioned in the bible, and not just once but 14 times!

Many people assume Greyhounds require tons of exercise and stimulation. While they love running, they also laze around and happily spend most of their day sleeping.

The couch is a Greyhound's favourite place, and they are always up for a movie night or Netflix marathon.

As they were bred to live in packs, this is one dog breed that does better with other dogs than as a solo pet. They are also totally gentle with children and live peacefully with cats.

Greyhounds are super chilled, gentle dogs with a streak of independence. Thus, they never act too needy or demanding.

Because they have short, coarse hair that sheds minimally, they require only a quick brush once or twice a week.

A Greyhound is one dog breed that wears clothes out of necessity, not just because they look sweet. Their short fur and low body fat mean they get cold quickly. Thus you can buy them a whole wardrobe of dog clothing, from coats and sweaters to booties and even pyjamas!

Meet the Greyhound

Greyhounds have distinct body shapes and appearances and are often described as lean, streamlined, and muscular. These large canines stand 68-76cm tall and weigh between 60 and 70 pounds.

It's easy to see that these dogs are built for speed, from their long legs to their wide thighs to their strong paw pads. Another significant aspect of the Greyhound's appearance is their well-sprung ribs and deep chests below their long, broad backs and slightly arched loins.

They are naturally aerodynamic, carrying practically zero body fat. This helps them reach top speeds on the track but does mean they get cold quickly. Thus, many Greyhound owners dress them in jumpers and coats during winter.

Greyhounds have elongated heads and necks with powerful jaws, well-chiselled muzzles, and rose-shaped ears. Their eyes are small, oval-shaped, and dark in colour.

Greyhounds have short coats that can come in various colours and patterns. There are around 30 possible variations, including white, brindle, fawn, black, red, and blue (grey).

The temperament of a Greyhound

The most prominent misconception people have about Greyhounds is around their energy levels. As racing dogs, people often assume they must be outside all the time and require multiple long walks and runs.

However, this is not the case at all. Greyhounds enjoy exercise as much as any dog but spend most of their time sleeping. In reality, they are real couch potatoes, and their favourite pastime is cuddling up with their owners on the couch for movie night.

Of course, they still need daily exercise, but a 30-minute walk and short play sessions are generally enough. Because of this, they don't necessarily need a home with a garden, but due to their size, they may not be the best choice for apartment life.

Aside from being surprisingly lazy, Greyhounds are known for their sweet and gentle temperatures. This is not an aggressive dog breed at all. As they were bred to hunt and chase in groups, Greyhounds get on well with other dogs. If a dog were to bark at them on the street, they would most likely ignore it and walk away than retaliate.

These dogs are independent enough to be left alone for a while but not for long periods. Like most breeds, they thrive in homes where someone is often around. They develop super close bonds with their owners, but some Greyhounds may act slightly reserved with strangers.

Best homes for a Greyhound

Greyhounds are incredibly gentle, making them a top choice for all families, including those with small children. If a kid was to irritate them, a Greyhound's natural instinct is to walk away rather than snap or nip them. Even so, like other breeds, early socialisation is still essential.

Because of their low aggression, Greyhounds live very well with other dogs. They are also entirely cat-friendly and are known to leave cats alone rather than try to play with them. However, this is different with smaller animals like rabbits, as they have a high prey drive. Thus, a Greyhound may not be the best choice if you have small animals in the home.

FAQs about the Greyhound

We've handpicked the very best Greyhound breeders in the UK to ensure you receive a healthy and even-tempered puppy that is raised in an ethical and loving environment. Our Greyhound breeders are all licensed, with many years of experience with this breed. They also raise their puppies in their own homes rather than at a commercial facility.

All our Greyhound puppies also receive a full health check before coming to you, along with 5 weeks of health insurance. Moreover, we use the safest pet travel approved by vets to transport your new puppy to you.

Greyhounds do fab in many types of homes, including those with children, dogs, and cats. They are known to be incredibly gentle and loving and are typically not aggressive.

Because of their large size, they may not be the best choice for a small flat. But they don't need much space or outdoor time as they sleep a lot. So a garden is not necessary, although it is still preferred.

Did you know the people behind The Pedigree Paws are ardent animal lovers, just like you? Thus, we share the same dream as you do; to completely eradicate unethical dog breeding in the UK and beyond.

We don't support commercial breeding facilities in any way and only work with licensed, private Greyhound breeders. These breeders raise their Greyhound puppies in their own homes and keep them with the mother dog until they are fully weaned and independent.

To demonstrate our pledge to improve dog breeding conditions, we've created a comprehensive in-house application process that every breeder must pass. In addition, we conduct numerous safety and ethical checks before accepting any breeder onto our platform.

Greyhounds are generally healthy canines, but like most breeds, they are prone to some diseases, particularly those related to the heart.

However, we do everything we can to ensure your Greyhound puppy will enjoy a long and healthy life. The breeder will take your new pup for a complete check-up at a licensed vet. They will do the first two core vaccinations, microchipping and a DNA health test to check for any genetic diseases they may carry.

In addition to providing proof of a clean health check, we provide 5 weeks of health insurance for your new puppy to ease your mind further.

All puppies are required to stay with their mother until at least ten weeks old, or longer if needed. This ensures the puppy weans naturally; forced weaning can cause various health and development problems.

Because every puppy develops at an individual rate, we may not be able to give you an exact date of when your new pup will be ready immediately (if they are less than 10 weeks old). However, in this case, the breeder will stay in contact with you and let you know an expected arrival date as soon as possible.

Of course, we want to make finding a new puppy as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. Before buying a pet, it is best to meet the puppy, its parents, and the breeder. However, this is not always possible if they are located far away.

So, in this case, you can arrange a video call with the breeder instead. You can virtually meet the Greyhound puppy and its parents and ask the breeder any questions.

Yes, all our breeders register their Greyhound puppies with one of the major international pedigree organisations before posting them for sale. You'll receive the original certification and documents detailing this before or at the same time as receiving your puppy.

We have total confidence that we work with the very best Greyhound breeders in the UK and Europe. We know this because we require all breeders to pass our thorough application procedure and checks before they can work with us.

Plus, all our breeders are fully licensed and registered with The Kennel Club or another international pedigree organisation. Moreover, they are long-established, experienced private breeders who raise their puppies in their own homes. We don't work with breeders who do this as a hobby or lack experience.

Every Greyhound puppy on The Pedigree Paws is raised in the breeder's home, where they grow up with their parents and siblings. As well as receiving immense love and care, our breeders socialise them by getting them used to people, children, and general home life. This enables them to grow into even-tempered companion dogs.

We are not associated with commercial dog breeding in any way. Moreover, we do not support puppies being bred and raised in cages or away from their mother.

Greyhounds are very friendly pups but can be a little reserved towards strangers. Therefore, they may initially require some time to decompress and settle before they are ready to fully join in their new family life. Because of this, we suggest keeping your Greyhound puppy in one room with the door closed when they first arrive. How long you should keep them there depends on their personality, but at least a few hours is recommended.

Once your pup seems settled and confident, you can show them around the rest of the house. In addition, slowly introduce them to the other family members, one by one, to avoid overwhelming them.
