CLEAR ALLThe Japanese Shiba Inu is a national icon of Japan. They are an ancient and respected dog breed originally bred to hunt small birds and occasionally chase wild boar. These loyal dogs honour training, attention, and exercise with affection and devotion. They are beautiful, muscular canines boasting an alert fox-like face and a lush double coat. Japanese Shiba Inus have been popular in Japan since the third century. Now, they are quickly growing in popularity around the rest of the world, including in the US and the UK.
Japanese Shiba Inu dogs are known for their strong-willed personalities, small erect ears, and cat-like agility. With their prick ears, squinty eyes, and curly tails, this dog breed has the appearance of a fox or even a stuffed toy! Their vocalisations are also unique, choosing to yodel or purr rather than bark.
This dog breed is recognised as being courageous. The Japanese people have three words to describe the Shiba Inus mental traits: ryosei (good nature), kaani-i (spirited boldness), and soboku (alertness). When combined, these traits make up an intelligent and strong-willed canine companion that will suit more experienced dog owners.

The Shibu is a small to medium-sized dog that stands 34 to 41 cm tall and weighs 7.7 to 10 kg. They have a compact yet sturdy, well-muscled build with moderately sloping shoulders and deep chests. Their bellies are well-tucked up, which adds to their athletic appearance, along with their powerful back legs.
The breed is characterised by its fox-like expression due to its small, deep-set, dark eyes and triangular, erect ears. Their head stands upon a moderately long neck.
The Shiba's tail is another fox-like characteristic - bushy, set high, and curling over its back. The Shiba Inu's plush double coat is equally as appealing, consisting of a soft undercoat and a coarse outer coat that protects them from various weather conditions. This coat comes in multiple colours: red, sesame, black and tan, and cream.
The Shiba Inu is renowned for its spirited and lively nature. These dogs have a strong sense of self-assuredness that stems from their ancient lineage as skilled hunters, and they are inherently curious and intelligent, which makes them keen explorers. However, this curiosity can lead them to be somewhat mischievous at times.
Shiba Inus are typically aloof around strangers, but this completely changes once they get to know someone. Like their cousins, the Akitas, Shibas form deep bonds with their families, who they will be loyal to until the day they die.
The Japanese Shiba Inu is always alert, which, combined with their natural protectiveness over their family and territory, makes them excellent watchdogs. These dogs are always quick to alert their owners to any unusual occurrences.
Shibas are incredibly clever and can quickly learn new skills when presented with engaging and stimulating training methods. However, they have an independent streak, so they may not always be eager to please like other breeds.
Due to their independence and aloofness, training and socialisation from an early age are crucial to help them develop well-rounded behaviours and manners. In particular, training and socialisation will help to control their territorial instincts and prevent aggression towards other dogs.
If bringing a Shiba puppy into a home with other dogs, train them to share toys, food, and space, as this is something they do not do well.
Shibas have unique traits and needs, including regular mental and physical stimulation. Thus they need an owner who can give them sufficient exercise and cognitive engagement and effectively train them. Moreover, they thrive when they have access to an adequately fenced garden where they can let off steam.
With proper training, a Shiba can be a good family dog, but they are better suited with older children who know how to treat this unique breed. Shibas are not the most patient canine, so they are generally unsuitable for families with toddlers.
As a territorial dog, the Japanese Shiba Inu is happiest as a solo pet. Socialising them with other animals is generally challenging but possible. However, it is not recommended to introduce them to small animals like cats and rabbits as this breed has a very high prey drive.

It's been a few months since we decided to find a Chihuahua puppy to join our family, however we had issues finding a good breeder.
We contacted The Pedigree Paws and they connected us with a very unique breeder in Greece. We were fortunate as George, the breeder was able to deliver the puppy to us personally. We are very pleased with our beautiful Athena.
