Breed traits and characteristics

The Pug's adorable face with deep wrinkles around its big, dark eyes is bound to make you smile. It’s thought that the name ‘Pug’ comes from the Latin word for ‘fist’ because their faces resemble a human fist.

Pugs are known to be clowns at heart, but they still carry themselves with pride. These are playful dogs that are always ready and willing to participate in a fun game. They are also very affectionate and love to be close to their humans as much as possible. Pugs enjoy being the centre of attention and can become heartsick if ignored.

Pugs are square and stocky canines that usually weigh no more than 8 kg. According to Chinese Legends, their trademark facial wrinkles were highly valued because they resembled good luck symbols.

Pugs will suit families with children of all ages because of their playful, patient natures. However, they require someone to be home for most of the day because these dogs are prone to separation anxiety.

No puppy mill pledge

10 reasons to add a Pug to your family

Pugs take their role as companion dogs very seriously and will do whatever they can to please and make you laugh. They have super quirky antics and play habits that will make the whole family hysterical.

Pugs don't need long or frequent walks, and as small pups, they can easily play indoors. Plus, some pugs are known to sleep for up to 14 hours a day!

Because of their moderate energy levels and love of humans, their owner's lap is commonly a pug's favourite spot.

Pugs love people, so these dogs are always up for a dinner party. They are very friendly towards new people and even happy to be held by strangers.

One great thing about pugs is that they have only ever been bred to be companion pets, so they don't possess typical dog instincts. So you don't have to worry about them chasing the neighbour's cat or killing birds.

Pugs and kids go together like tea and biscuits, or fish and chips. Pugs love the attention they get from kids as much as children love the look and personality of a pug. So if you're after a family pet, you can't get much better than a pug.

Another great thing about pugs is that they are rarely aggressive to their own kind. So it's totally fine to introduce them to your friends' dogs or even get them their own canine friend.

These canines have been around for centuries. They were prevalent during the Victorian era, as they can be found in many paintings from this time.

Before they made their way to the UK, pugs were the companion dogs of Chinese emperors and royals. This pattern continued when they did arrive in Britain, as Queen Victoria had several of them.

Finally, pugs are easily one of the cutest dog breeds. Their squishy faces and expressive eyes will melt your heart whenever you look at them.

Meet the Pug

The pug is a small but robust dog, boasting a muscular figure and large head. They typically weigh between 6.3 to 8.2 kg and stand 24 to 33 cm tall. All four legs are well-muscled, and they have broad chests, well-sprung ribs and tightly curled tails.

The pug's large, round head is noticeably disproportionate to its small body, and its snubbed nose is oversized. Their short muzzle is black, like their small round eyes set far apart, giving a constant endearing look.

Of course, another distinctive physical trait of this pup is its wrinkles. These are predominant on their face, but their necks and backs can also be wrinkled. Their necks are also very thick, short, and slightly arched.

The pug's ears are small, floppy, and feel like velvet. They can also have black spots or markings on their face, known as the breed's beauty spots.

Pugs boast a short, smooth, double coat that looks glossy and fine. Although they all have dark muzzles, a pug can have four possible coat colours: Apricot, Silver, Fawn, or Black. Fawn is the most popular.

The temperament of a Pug

Pugs are incredibly affectionate and loving and always want to be beside their owner. However, they are not highly active and are usually content to cuddle up with you on the couch whenever you're around.

These canines are laid back and eager to please their humans, but they can sometimes be stubborn. Pugs also have very playful, entertaining characters and are natural social butterflies. They thrive on human attention and love when guests are visiting. They can be a bit mischievous at times, though!

Because of their constant need for human attention, this breed does not do well left alone and can quickly suffer from separation anxiety. They may resort to destructive behaviour like excessive barking, digging, or chewing if left alone for too long.

Another thing you should know about living with a pug is that they are very loud sleepers! Because they are a snub nose breed, they often wheeze, snort, and snore. So if you permit your pug to sleep in bed with you, you want to get some earplugs!

In addition, these dogs don't tolerate extreme weather well. Thus, you'll need to take extra measures to keep them warm in the winter and cool during the summertime.

Best homes for a Pug

Pugs do well in all types of homes, including flats and apartments. They are not highly energetic, don't take up too much space, and don't tend to bark much, so they are an excellent option for people living in flats or tiny houses.

As social dogs, pugs thrive in large families and especially adore being around children. So a pug will love living with you if you have a busy household with multiple children. However, remember they don't like to be left alone much, so at least one person must be always/often home.

FAQs about the Pug

We've selected the very best pug breeders in Britain who are fully licensed, reputable and experienced in breeding pugs. In addition, all our breeders raise their puppies from their homes, where they stay with their mother and siblings until they become fully independent.

In addition, we do many things to ensure you're getting a healthy and even-tempered puppy who will grow into an excellent family companion. For example, before you receive your new pug, the puppy will have a complete health check with a vet, including a DNA test to check they are clear of genetic diseases. Moreover, all puppies come with 5 weeks of health insurance.

Moreover, as we know you may live too far from the breeder to pick your new puppy up yourself, we've teamed up with the most reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel in the UK.

If you're looking for an affectionate family pet who will keep you company while you watch your favourite TV shows, become your nap buddy, and make all your friends fall in love with them, then yes!

Pugs are known for being loving, playful, social, and entertaining. They are also excellent around children and amicable towards other dogs and cats. However, note that this breed can suffer separation anxiety and needs to be in a home where someone is always or often around.

The vision of Pedigree Paws is to eradicate unethical and unlicensed dog breeding in the United Kingdom (and beyond). To align our actions with our values, we only work with licensed private pug breeders with industry experience.

We are also proud to say that all our breeders raise their pug puppies in their own family homes. This is the most loving and safe environment for a puppy to grow up in for many reasons:
1. They stay with their mother and wean at a natural rate.
2. They get all the care they need.
3. They are socialised with various humans and other animals from birth.

As a brachycephalic breed, pugs carry some health concerns that all new owners should know. For example, they can have breathing difficulties, regurgitation problems, and sleep disorders.

While we cannot prevent these breed-specific issues, as they are due to the dog's specific anatomy, we can take measures to ensure they are otherwise healthy. Thus, before your pug comes to you, it will get the following:

● A full health check-up with a licenced vet
● A clean DNA health test screening for genetic diseases
● Their first two vaccinations (and their vaccine booklet)
● A microchip
● 5 weeks of health insurance starting from the arrival date

All our pug puppies stay with the breeder and the mother dog until they are at least 8 to 10 weeks old, fully weaned and independent. Therefore, bringing any puppy home is only possible once they reach 8 to 10 weeks old.

If the puppy you are interested in is under 10 weeks old, the breeder will let you know when you can expect to bring them home. Also, note that puppy development is always individual, so some pups need longer with their mother than others.

While choosing a new puppy is super exciting, we know it can also be nerve-wracking. Because there are so many rogue breeders out there, it's natural to worry about the health or temperament of your new puppy.

Because of this, we offer several things to make the experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. For example, we provide photos of the puppy and its parents, and you can even arrange a video call with the breeder if you have further questions.

Yes, of course. All The Pedigree Paws breeders register their pug puppies with a reputable international pedigree organisation like The Kennel Club. This will be done before you take home your new pup, and you'll get the original registration documents.

Only breeders who we are 100% sure run licensed, moral operations can advertise their puppies on The Pedigree Paws. How do we ensure this? We have a thorough application procedure that every breeder must complete and pass, along with various checks to prove the breeder's authenticity.

All our pug puppies are born in the breeder's family home, where they stay with the mother dog, receiving all the love, care, and early socialisation they need to grow into fantastic family pets.

This environment gives them the best start in life and is the only ethical way to breed dogs. For this reason, we don't and never will work with commercial breeding facilities.

Although pugs are generally very friendly and pleasant to everyone they meet, it's natural that your new puppy may feel apprehensive about leaving their mother and going to a new place. So, to reduce stress and overwhelm, we recommend doing the following.

● When your new puppy arrives, confine them to one room (with you) for the first few hours.
● Set them up in a cosy bed in a quiet, dark corner.
● Once they seem settled, show them around the house on a leash so that they know you are the leader.
