Breed traits and characteristics

The Samoyed’s loyalty and desire for human companionship possibly come from their close connection with the Samoyede people. These tribes originally bred and raised these dogs thousands of years ago on the Taimyr Peninsula of Siberia. Back then, Samoyed dogs pulled sleds, hunted game, herded reindeer, and protected the Samoyede against any threats, including predators. These dogs also lived with their people, played with their children, and helped to keep them warm in the harsh cold climate.

The reputation of the Samoyed breed as smart and affectionate is well-earned. They frequently choose to adore one particular person in a home. However, they are still loving with everyone in their pack. They are at their happiest when they are with their families. These dogs enjoy participating in all activities inside the household as well as regular walks in the countryside.

The Samoyed is famous for its smile, known as the ‘Sammy smile’. This is the small but visible, upturned corners of their mouths. This dog breed is content and cheerful with a glass-half-full attitude towards life and the people they live with.

10 reasons to add a Samoyed to your family

These dogs develop close bonds with all members of the family, including children

As working dogs, Samoyeds are always looking for a way to help and will offer their assistance however they can.

Samoyeds have a zest for life and a permanent smile which naturally rubs off on everyone they interact with.

These intelligent, energetic pups ace every dog sport and agility game they learn and can even excel in extreme sports such as sledging.

These canines don't tire easily and love long walks and hikes. So if you want to spend more time in nature, a Samoyed will assist you.

As they are vocal and alert, you can trust this dog to always tell you about any dodgy goings ons.

While they will tell you if someone is at the door, they won't act aggressively. Moreover, they always welcome the attention they get from strangers on the street.

As these dogs developed in sub-zero temperatures and unforgiving weather conditions, Samoyeds are robust and don't get sick easily.

These dogs are so fluffy they look like a cross between a teddy bear and a cloud. As a result, they make the cosiest and warmest snuggle buddies.

Finally, their luxurious pure white coats and black-rimmed eyes and lips make this canine one truly gorgeous pup.

Meet the Samoyed

Samoyeds are medium to large-sized dogs that stand 48 to 60 cm tall. Males are noticeably larger and heavier than females; males typically weigh 22 to 30 kg, while females are roughly 16 to 22 kg.

The Samoyed's thick, white fur is easily their most distinctive and adored trait. This lush double coat is thick and water-resistant to protect them from extreme temperatures. It comprises a short, silky, close-lying undercoat and a coarser, straight overcoat that stands away from the body.

White is the most common hair colour you will see on these dogs. However, it is possible to find slighter dark shades, such as biscuit & white, and cream.

Underneath this mass of white fur is a very muscular body. Samoyeds have broad, moderately long backs, powerful legs, deep chests and well-sprung ribs. In addition, they have heavily feathered tails that typically curl over their back. You'll also see lots of fluffy fur covering the soles of their feet and well-cushioned paw pads to protect them from the harsh cold climate.

The Samoyed's wedge-shaped head has a moderately long muzzle and dark almond-shaped eyes with black rims that boast an alert expression. Another unique trait of this breed is their permanently smiley face, known as the 'Sammy smile,' due to the upturned corners of their mouths.

The temperament of a Samoyed

As working dogs, Samoyeds are incredibly bright and full of energy. However, this is not a lazy dog by any means, and they much prefer to have something to do than just lay around on the couch. Because of this, they naturally best suit an equally active human who will involve them in their daily activities and enjoy long walks and hikes with them.

These dogs are also super playful and adore dog sports and other dog-friendly games. So they will thrive if you engage them in regular play sessions. They also enjoy being outdoors, but are known to be impressively good at escaping, so be sure to dog-proof your garden well!

Samoyeds develop close bonds with those they live with, becoming extremely devoted. They are full of affection for their whole family, but this breed does tend to choose a favourite human.

These dogs are known to be pretty vocal, making them good watchdogs. However, you will likely need to control this by training them, so they learn not to bark at every little thing.

Samoyeds need frequent human attention and exercise, which, unfortunately, does not make them a good candidate for leaving alone for long. In fact, they quickly suffer from separation anxiety, so they need to live with a family who is home regularly.

These pups are friendly to everyone they meet and never standoffish or aggressive. However, they can be strong-willed and stubborn, making training challenging. For this reason, they are best suited to those with previous dog experience.

Best homes for a Samoyed

Samoyeds love all humans, including children, so they do great in families or with young couples. However, as they need an owner who can match their energy, they may be too much for retirees who are not so mobile or seek a quiet life.

Although naturally friendly, socialisation and training are crucial for this breed, especially if bringing them into a home with children. This is because they tend to herd small children around the house and need to learn how to control their energy around kids due to their size and weight.

Samoyeds can live with other dogs. However, it's best to introduce them as puppies to ensure harmonious living. They are not the best fit for homes with cats or other animals due to their hunting and herding instincts.

FAQs about the Samoyed

We've selected the top samoyed breeders in the UK and Europe who are fully licensed, reputable and experienced with raising this breed. In addition, they breed and raise their Samoyeds from their family homes. Here, the puppies stay with their mother and siblings until they become fully independent and they experience family life from birth.

At The Pedigree Paws, we are committed to ensuring every puppy is healthy and even-tempered. To do this, every puppy gets a complete health check with a vet and has a DNA test to check they are clear of genetic diseases. We also include 5 weeks of health insurance for additional peace of mind.

Moreover, as our breeders are based all over the UK, you will likely live too far away to pick up your new puppy yourself. So we have teamed up with the most reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel in the UK to bring your new pup to you in the safest and most stress-free way.

Samoyeds are big fluffy balls of energy and affection. They are incredibly loving and loyal and form close bonds with their humans. However, they are also very energetic and playful and get bored quickly.

Because of this, Samoyeds do best with an owner who is active and willing to involve their dog in their daily activities. This breed can only be left alone for a short time, so only consider getting a Samoyed if you are at home often.

Pedigree Paws' vision is to eliminate all unethical, unlicensed dog breeding in the UK (and beyond). To align our actions with our values, we choose only to work with licensed private Samoyed breeders who demonstrate ethical operations and significant industry experience.

We're also happy to say that all our Samoyed breeders raise their puppies in their own family homes. This is the best (and only acceptable) environment for dogs to be bred in for many reasons:

1. They remain with their mother for a sufficient time and wean naturally.
2. They get individual care and attention.
3. They become socialised with various humans and other animals from the day they are born.

As Samoyed originate from one of the coldest parts of the earth, these dogs are developed to deal with harsh environments and extreme temperatures, making them extremely hardy. Because of this, many Samoyed owners note that their pups don't get sick often or easily.

Even so, like all breeds, there are some health conditions Samoyeds seem to be prone to. So to increase the likelihood of your puppy leading a long and healthy life, the breeder will arrange the following things:

● A full health check-up with a licenced veterinarian
● A clean DNA health test that screens for various genetic diseases
● The puppy's first two vaccinations and microchipping
● 5 weeks of health insurance starting from your puppy's arrival date

All Samoyed puppies must stay with the breeder and mother dog until they are 8 to 10 weeks old at a minimum. This ensures they develop well and wean slowly and fully to thrive independently.

If the Samoyed puppy you are interested in is under 10 weeks old, the breeder will inform you of the date you can expect to bring them home. However, note that puppy development is individual, and some pups may need to stay longer with their mother than others.

As pet owners ourselves, we know there is a mixture of excitement and apprehension when getting a new puppy.

So, to make the process as worry-free as possible, we offer several things. For example, we always provide photos of the puppy and its parents, and you can arrange a call with the breeder if you have further questions or concerns.

Yes, of course. Our breeders register each puppy with a reputable international pedigree institution like The Kennel Club. This will already be done before you purchase your puppy, and you will receive the original registration documents before or at the same time as getting your new pup.

At Pedigree Paws, we are very serious about where our puppies come from and how they are raised. Thus, we do several things to ensure our breeders run licensed, moral operations.

For example, the first step is to complete and pass the thorough application procedure we have put in place. We will then carry out various checks to prove the breeder's authenticity.

All our Samoyed puppies are born in the breeder's family home, where they stay in a safe, loving environment with the mother dog and siblings. Here they get individual attention, free access to their mother's milk, and early socialisation to help them grow into fantastic family pets.

We believe this is the only ethical way to breed dogs; thus, we don't work with commercial breeding facilities of any kind.

Samoyeds are known for being people-oriented and are generally friendly to everyone they meet. However, it's natural that your new puppy will feel a bit scared and apprehensive about leaving their mother and going to an unfamiliar place. Therefore, we recommend doing the following to make this transition as stress-free as possible.

● When your new Samoyed arrives, confine them to one room (with you) for the first couple of hours at least. Ensure this room is quiet and free from constant activity.
● Create a safe space for your puppy by placing a cosy bed in a quiet, dark corner. Be sure to leave this there for at least the first few days.
● Keep the pup on a leash the first time you show them around the house, so they understand you are the leader.
